Default Ls1 Piston Ring gap

1999 ls1 .023-0.24 on top rings, .017-.019 on the second ring, and oil rings .026-.031. Build is stock, may see boost but probably not. What should I be looking for as far as ring gap on each ring including oil rings?

Second ring must have larger gap than top ring or gases can’t escape. It will cause ring flutter and rings won’t seal. With .023-.024 top, you need to shoot for .026-.028 second ring. Oil rings are fine. Are you 100% sure that you don’t have top ring and second ring mixed up?

The ring brand is Hastings and they came individually packaged marked 1st/2nd/3rd. The second ring also has a dot - which is consistent with a “which ring is the top ring” video they have. So I am 99% sure they are correct.

So I guess I need to file the second ring down to .026-.028?

Seems like these first ring gaps are screaming to be boosted….

The rings are ridiculous today. I went through checking two sets of Hastings iron rings and each had a top gap of around .028. While I did not measure the second ring, the gap appeared larger. I talked to the machine shop about the size of the rings and he said all Hastings rings had larger gaps than the OE .015, and not worry about it. So, I guess they're all gaped for boost and nitrous.
