Answer these before making any further observations....
it calls for 6qts and i put 7.5 qts in it. No oil on the floor, correct dipstick length, factory oil pan. At this point is doesnt matter because i figure it out when i rebuild the engine

the oil pan and dipstick are both from factory. All i can think of is maybe some dirt got in it and is rubbing against the dipstick but there would be some sign of oil right?

I have a feeling that with the thinner oils being used these days, it just wasn't readily visible on the stick.
With a pan filled to over-spec with oil, and matching pan and stick, the above can be the only logical explanation.

The end of your dipstick hasnt broken off?
Has the dipstick tube been pulled out of its hole?
Your going to have to get under the truck and make sure .
Id be getting some small gauge wire a little longer than dipstick length and slide tht in, make it a lot longer and slide al the way.
You are pouring the oil into the top of the valve cover?

Would you give a little more detail, please. I'm guessing the dipstick tube wasn't fully inserted???

You mean a hole in the SIDE of the tube that the dipstick could poke thru to the outside of the block?

Sorry for the delay on this response. Yes there was a hole on the side of the tube and it tucked behind the exhaust manifold so i never seen it poke out until i started to pull the manifold off.

I once got a huge surprise on a dipstick issue. As in I forgot to install it! Remembered everything else, though. This is what happens when you work too late and too long on something and start getting tired. BTW....You would not believe how much oil came out of that dipstick tube hole in the 4 or 5 seconds it took before the smoke was visible, and the "Oh ****" moment set in!!!!

Ive done the same thing before Mike. No smoke however, just oil running in the floor, before I caught it. Late at night and tired always ends up with a detail out of whack it seems.
