Default Lq4 - no oil on dipstick after oil change

Problem found. Hole in dipstick tube at the very bottom where it connects to the block. Thanks for the help.

I have a lq4 in my 01 Silverado and i didnt my first oil change a while back. I checked the level right before i drained the oil and after i filled it back to the specified 6 quarts. I went to check the dipstick and there was no oil. Any ideas why?

What? You put 6 qts of oil and the dipstick shows you don't have any oil? Unless you have a huge oil spill underneath (check that first), the dipstick must be lying to you. Maybe you have the incorrect dipstick. Crack the drain plug to make sure you have oil in the pan.

Did you check the oil level right after pouring it in before it could even reach the pan?If you dont have an obvious leak, give it a quick start for a for seconds and then wait a min or 2 and then check the level and top up if needed.

Might need to get yourself some better spectacles. Clean oil is much harder to see on a dipstick, especially in certain lighting conditions...

Don't know if this makes any sense but dip sticks have a coating on them to prevent rust. Makes them very slick. Years ago I had to lightly scuff the dip stick with a scotch brite pad to get the oil to stick to the stick better.

Every time I do an oil change I need to angle the dipstick into the light to catch a reflection on the new oil to see what the level is at.

Talking

Wipe the dip stick clean, push it in, pull it out and tip the end up about 30 degrees. that will make the clean oil pool at the edge where the level is so it is easy to see.
Hope that helps.

I just lightly blast them with the bead blaster. Puts a dull finish on it, making it easy to read.

i checked it right after, after running and driving it, nothing, it say for a couple weeks and didnt read anything. I have a oil fill neck leak but that started about a week after the initial oil change.

If it is obvious there is oil in the pan and nothing shows on the stick, then it is equally obvious the stick isn't reaching the oil.....
Broken or wrong dipstick, as previously discussed in this thread

Yeah, maybe you have a mismatched set of dipstick and tube.
Dipstick and tube is cheap. Just for kicks and grins, get a matched set made for your vehicle and see if that changes things.

Other reason might be is you have a bigger oil pan than stock for that engine (which would be kind of nice actually, just need to know the correct capacity).

Clean the dipstick well with brake cleaner then provide a contrast by marking it with a sharpie to make it more visible.

Well if theres no oil on the floor then add a half quart, if nothing add another halk quart , keep going until it shows on dipstick. My aussie gm holds 7.8 quart, its not a silverado tho
