I wouldn't be trusting an LS6 block to the job for a start. Maybe a cast iron block would be a good thing in this kind of application

Better leave this to the 'super spanners' . It's going to need a pretty comprehensive 'RX' to ensure you don't wind up with a 'whiz-bang' under the hood. Everything including your fuel system and even spark plugs will require a very good looking into.

a 500hp shot is pretty ambitious

THE HELL? 400-500 shot?! Holy crap, lol. Is this gonna be like a grand finale for your block or something?

I would suggest something along these lines
6.0L iron block
Oliver rods
Diamond Forged pistons
Callies or Lunati crank
Diamond piston rings
ARP bolts
damn good builder

we are planning to possibly go to a 400 shot(dual staged) on our 408 stroker but we'll start out at 200 and work our way up.

Are was running a 400shot on their 8.5 sec car weren't they? Maybe talk to them? It was a re-sleeved stock block at that.

I would build a turbo set up before i would ever want to spray that much. I know it can be done but you could only get one pass out of it and it could be all gone.

I've been spraying 300, and only blew up the motor because I let out then got back into it. This was on an aluminum block.

Fuel system is in place already for a 400-500 shot. Spark plugs are sitting on the counter The limit on these motors has been with keeping the heads down, now with the AFR heads out, that problem seems to be solved. I just wanted ideas on a piston & rod that would handle the hit.

I know I would upgrade the head studs, and every other bolt in the engine, including beefed up main caps.

400 to 500 should be no problem. We put 600-900hp shots on our 706 race motors all the time. Of course it's in stages, but still. Not sure why everyone here thinks a 400 shot is some unachievable crazy thing? Anyway, what Forcefed listed above, except for the Diamond ringset, is good. I would opt for some Hellfire rings or C&A. You should be good to go.

Yes that was a 'ARE' Big Bore LS6 block, it had 400++ of nitrous in a single stage, kinda like a mack truck hitting you at the line when it dead hooks! LOL ......
If anybody wanted to be 'safer' we can also do Aluminum 4.000, 4.030, 4.060 or 4.080 sleeve combinations. I think with these thicker sleeves, it will be just as strong an iron block. Of course you could always have us Resleeve a C5R block and never have a worry! (more for big boost guys).
thanks

As for the original question about pistons and rods, I know these will take a 500 shot... Ross Pistons and GRP rods. You could substitute the Aluminum rod for a 4340 steel rod, but the piston better have a thick ringland, so don't go past a 4" stroke. We have had some 3.875" stroke combos going together and this could be an option also.. a 3.875 stroke with a bore from 4.030-4.100 will produce 396- 409 cubes, your choice. The bigger the power adder, it would be a good idea to take some cubes out for reliability... ... Rings needed would either be G2000 or Hellfire's.

A nice set of Dimond pistions with bigger ring lands and gas ports (custom cut, thats what im using) and i know the Hellfire rings would be a must!!!! I know lunati makes a real nice rod, or a skat H-beam is sweet!!!!
other then that good luck. 500 is no joke, im starting with a single stage 200-300 this year, and a possable 2nd stage next year. we shall see!

if you go with diamond, make sure you get a custom set desinged for this kind of abuse like me. they are a little heavier then the off the self pistons but the extra thick deck will will keep it all stay together. i once sprayed a 200 shot on them, blew the tranny and hit the limiter on the spray. needless to say, one of my heads melted to crap and the pistons didn't even look like anything ever happen. i put some other heads on it and sprayed it again a month later with a fixed tranny and every thing was ok. when i had them made, i explaned that i would be spraying up to a 350 in the future and they said no problem. here is a pic of them. you can see how much further down the rings are compared to regualar pistons. you will lose a little bit of NA power like this but not much.

I dont think it would be a big deal if it was staged but if you just hit the throttle and make 900rhp and 1000+tq i dont think the motor would like it.

For pistons i recommend a custom set of J.E pistons.Ive seen guys spray 700-800 shots and not have a problem with them. They are the piston of choice on the fastest streetcars in G.R.(7 sec cars)

Diamond, Diamond, Diamond and a set of Carillo's.

Harold, give me a call, I can get you a sweet deal on the pistons!

Thanks
