Default Main Crank Bearing Clearance

My main crank clearance is off by 3 to 3.5 thousands with new standard King bearings, my crank is within specs. I see a lot of bearing choices 001 is this common to be off that much

Rich, how are you measuring this? When you say “off”, do you mean you missed your desired spec by .003-.0035?

Total clearance was 3 to 3.5 thousandth i believe the desired spec is 2 to 2.5 thousandth so too much clearance. So maybe a bearing that's .001 will fix the problem. I am going to call my machine shop in the morning and see what he recommends. I am not sure what my brother in law used to measure with but he had i tool inserted in the bearing then measured

The only way you're going to get a correct measurement is to use a dial bore gauge on the mains with the bolts torqued. I don't see a within spec crank giving you .003-.0035 clearance. And the crank and block need to be measured while they're in the same room at the same temperature.

The block and crank are in the same heated room the block is a 5.7 aluminum LS1 The bolts ere torqued and a micrometer was used to measure. Using the 001 bearings it should get me to .002 - .0025

.001 bearings are usually extra clearance bearings.

If you are coming up with a true .003 clearance and the block I.D. and the crank journal are within spec, The try another set of bearings.

It doesn't matter who manufactures them, it's not uncommon to get a set that doesn't meet your expectation.

-.001" or .001"? Because .001" will make your bearing clearances worse, not better. You need a negative .001, which is a thicker bearing.
