Default Name this sound...

My car has a supercharger.

Ok, ok, it doesn't, but it sure as hell sounds like it does. There is a whining sound coming my engine whenever I accelerate in 2nd or 3rd gear at around 2-3k rpm.

The best way to describe it would be that it sounds similar to an 03 Cobra with the stock eaton under minimal boost. The pitch gets higher as the engine revs. After 3k rpm I can't hear it due to my exhaust .

Any ideas to what it could be? TIA

-Travis

Some lids can make that sound, and I've heard there is a silencer thing in some of the lids that when removed makes it even louder.

I had a feeling that it was my alternator.

As for it being the rear, Im positive it isnt. As a matter of fact, my rear was just rebuilt around 3 weeks ago. Its silent as its ever been.

I second that. When my power steering pump was low on fluid it would whine and sound like a weak supercharger (I guess). The rack used to leak like a siv and I always knew it was time to add more steering fluid when I heard the "supercharger whine."

I put some more power steering fluid in and the sound is still there.

I noticed that it only makes it when the car is under load. I reved it when it was in neutral and no sound at all.

At this point I HOPE its the throwout bearing, as next week Im getting a new clutch/flywheel/slave and master cylinder installed.

What do you guys think?

Definetely Not the Lid. It only happens under load. Plus, Ive had my lid for a while now and the noise just started.

third.... mine made a sound likt that a while ago it wa slow on fliid.... you couls always spray wd40 or equivilent on the belt while it's running. it may last a minute but it may help you narrow it down. also i heard a while back that a guy on an lt1 had a chirping sound and it ended up being a crank pulley, if i remember right i think it was an underdrive pulley but nontheless. i'd just wait till you have your clutch, ets in there and see if the tob was the problem.

Just a suggestion, have you tried pulling the belt off the car and driving it under a load? Im not talking about going for a cruse, but a short blast.
