Those who didnt swap timing chain with cam
For all those people who didnt swap their timing chain when putting in a new cam, how did it turn out and what are the chances that the stock one will actually break. I got a 98 thats got around 50k one it just wondering if I really need to replace the chain when installing the new cam. Anyone who skipped the timing chain if you could just say your mileage and how it turned out, would be great.

I skipped the chain when I installed my G5X3. My stock chain has 86k miles on it now, I didn't want to pull the pan down any to replace the chain. I am planning to install a Comp adj timing chain pretty shortly, along with some ARP rod bolts, and a new oil pump. I wanted to do all those at once, and I need them since I am going to be running a 150 shot real soon.
I personally don't think it's neccessary if you are just putting in a cam, this is the same timing chain that I used for my last cam too, so that's a stock cam, 224/228 cam and a X3 cam on this chain, still works fine.

50k miles, eh, I think you'd be ok... however, since you've got a '98 I would replace the oil pump. And since you're going that far, you might as well replace the chain since you don't have to do anymore work to get at it... to save money you could always just get another stock chain, which you'd be fine with. Otherwise, you might want to look into a stronger single chain.

I only had 8000 miles on my motor when I changed my cam. Kept the stock chain at that time. Know I have heads and a new cam on the way, and Jay from Absolute said the chain should be something I should change. So at 12000 miles, I will put an aftermarket one on there. I just don't see taking any chances after the amount of money I have put into this thing.
With those miles, it would be good insurance. The stock ones have a tendency to stretch. Or thats what I have read. I have no proof of that though.

I built my 382 stroker in my 99 Vette and left the stock chain. 2 weeks later i had 14 Bent valves when my chain broke.
For 100-200 dollars its cheap insurance.

i slapped in the cam at around 40k on the clock and didnt replace the chain. I put roughly 5-7k on the car untill i went ahead and installed heads. Then i installed a new jwis chain just for a peice of mind. In my opinion the stocker should be fine, cause any chain could break. Justa matter of luck. If you feel the need, just get a brand new stocker and slap in there for a peice of mind. Good luck
