Default leaking cometic gaskets...

well guys i have a decision to make here.. i bought a used (2000 mile) shortblock (02 model ls1) to install in my 98..i got a set of headstuds and used cometic gaskets with it..i am currently having my heads refreshed and am going to assemble very very soon..my problem is i cant make up my mind about the head gaskets..i have the used cometics and they look to be in good shape..just a little film peeling off here and there and right around where the cylinder holes are. its not bad at all..i have been reading and reading about nightmares regarding cometic gaskets not sealing correctly..i DONT want to take off the heads once they are in the car.. i was going to order some new ones from napa but cant decide if they will like the 100 shot or not..i had no issues with my stockers until my rod bearing decided to take a dump. i paid nothing for these gaskets as they seller was kind enough to give them to me with my motor purchase..just dont want the damn things to leak..talk me in or out of it..
thanks matt

Get another set .043 to bump your compression a little, improve quench and sturdier for nitrous.

Buy Fel Pro #1041 race gaskets, .043", big bore stainless o-rings, sweet gaskets no leaks or B.S.

There is nothing wrong with Cometics, they only leak if you don't do a good job of prepping the block and heads. I have zero issues with mine and they are awesome gaskets especially for high compression, boost, and nitrous. They are re-usable, but I don't think I would do it either, especially when they were mated with a different set of heads originally. Fel Pro's are also great gasket's and much cheaper. Either way, I would replace them IMO..

The peeling your seeing is most likley the .001" layer of viton that is the main sealer on these gaskets. If it is coming off, do not use them. Teh other gaskets listed, like the fel-pros are for big bore's. 4.125" to be exact. You could use them, but compression will suffer a touch over using the correct gasket. I've also heard just as much bad things on them as the cometics. I'd look into the Mr gasket .043"s or just get some stockers.
