Have the heads inspected with a new valve job. Replace the springs on the heads. Hone the cylinder walls. Install new piston rings. Install new rod and main bearing. Have the block inspected for deck straightness and cracks or fatigue. That would be the main list to be done other than necessary gaskets such as water pump, heads, and exhaust.

First of all whats broken?
If everything is ok and your just doing it for the hell of it.
Head bolts, head gaskets
Crank balancer bolt
Piston rings and block honing if your replacing them
Dexcool, oil, filter
Exhaust manifold gaskets
I'm sure there are a few more, it all depends on what your wanting to do.

Yep, then get all the stuff I mentioned above, you will want the block out, have it rehoned, put some new rings in there.
This would be a great time to also save up and get yourself a set of forged connecting rods and pistons, they won't cost that much more and while you have it all apart its more important to do than a cam. The stock crank is pretty tough in these cars, I think mightymouse was even running it all the way up to 700-800whp.

Lots of people do stuff like break the oil press sending unit, which is $50-$60, are you doing the whole rebuild yourself?

Go on Ebay do a search on LS1 and see the pistons and rod combo Mahle motorsports pistons and Hawk H-beam connecting rods for $745 shipped this is pistons, rings , rods and pins. The rods are rated at 800hp and they are good quality just have to do a lt of cheacking of the clearances. The pistons are some of the beso out there just ask Kurt over at Wheel to Wheel. MTI just asyembled mine and it turned out great. Just a sugestion though. If you wanted to get away even cheaper have your stock rods bushed for full floating pins and use ARP bolts And just buy the pistons I think they were only $385 for the pistons and rings and pins. Good luck.

I am considering the same thing as you, 98NBM. However during the course I think I will just make the leap to a 383 while I'm at it. I don't want to swap blocks as mine is in good condition(63k miles w/o issues) but it needs a freshening up before a healthy cam gets put in, so if its going to get honed and new pistons, I got a quote for all the work and it was ~$1600 from a sponser. Hell Eagle 383 packages are only 300 bucks more then that. I'll do all the work besides the hone myself and reap the benefits of extra cubes

Rod bolts - might as well upgrade to ARP while you're there, very easy to do.
Oil Pump - time for replacement
Timing Chain - again, time for replacement
Spark Plugs
If your upgrading the cam you'll want to replace the valve springs/retainers as well. Even if it's not a big cam, 118K is a lot of wear on springs.
As for all your gaskets, TSP sells a two different head/cam swap gasket/bolt kits that have most of them. I used the basic kit which includes: GM head gaskets, GM head bolts, GM water pump gaskets, GM timing cover seal, GM front seal, GM harmonic balancer bolt. But I had to buy my rear main seal, and reuse my rear engine cover gasket (I know, NOT supposed to, but it was in good shape). I also had to buy new header gaskets, but those are cheap. I reused my valve cover gaskets as well.
I have a webshots album of pics from my rebuild, I haven't uploaded the final pics yet, but the majority of them are there. You can see them here: Toonz's Engine Rebuild
Let me know if you have any more questions.
