Default How to change lifters?

I asked this on the other forum and in two days, not a single person could give me an answer to this. Hopefully I'm not getting in over my head on this swap, I didnt think lifers would be that hard, I just dont know all the steps to do it.

When I do my cam and heads swap this spring, I planned on changing the lifters since I have 67k miles on my car. Does anyone know of a walkthrough or have the steps necessary to do this? Thanks in advance.

if you have the heads off its simple. just unbolt the lifter guides and pull the old lifters out, slip the new ones in the guide, then put them back in the block and bolt the guides back in place.

The best source for this sort of information is your car's service manual. Duplicating or even summarizing that information here would require considerable effort. Many questions such as yours go unanswered for these reasons.

The whole point of having access to an internet form like this one, or the various other car related forums is to share the knowledge and experience of thousands of other people who have the same interests as you.

Simply referring them to a service manual really defeats the purpose of an internet forum since not everyone has access to a service manual.

And to Onyx, thanks for the info. I didn't think it would be hard, I just wanted to make sure since NONE of the head swap walkthroughs I've seen on the 'net even mention it.

Constrictor, No offense intended or taken but I beg to differ. A forum such as this and the service manual COMPLIMENT each other - they are sources of different types of information. In my opinion, anyone digging into the internals of machinery as complex as an LS1 must have access to a service manual, especially if starting something they had not previously done. Conversely, this forum provides access to the experience of experts at improving the performance of our cars. We need to be careful lest we drive them away with inappropriate questions.

Sigh....

Although I may not post here much, I post over on one of the other boards quite a bit. I do not consider myself to be an all knowing expert on here, but I do know enough to do a cam swap.

I appreciate Gary's concern for not wanting me to get in over my head with a lifter change, but as everyone here has said, it is super simple once the heads are off, and I can be the judge if theres something I can or cannot do myself. That is all the information I wanted.

PSJ, I did read the head swap info on www.ls1howto.com and the one over at www.ls1info.com, and neither of them mention how to get the lifters out, that is why I asked this question.

I try my best to help other people out on these boards when someone asks a question that I have experience with, and that is all I wanted out of here. In response to me being labelled as fussy, I apologize if I came off that way, but I did wait 2 whole days for a response and didnt get one. Thats why I came over to this forum to ask my question.

I dont want anyone to think Im trying to be a troublemaker here, but I try to follow the rules as best as possible on these boards, and I just get irritated when a simple question like I asked gets turned into a multi-responsed Battle Royale where are calling me names and questioning my ability to perform such an easy task.

Lastly, thank you to those who took the time to answer my question.

Underneath the gaskets, you can see 2 10mm bolts holding each lifter retainer cup (the brown plastic things holding 4 lifters each). Unbolt the lifter retainers making sure to NOT DROP THE BOLT, and then pull them up and out. You should get a few lifters still stuck in each retainer, grab the ones that didn't come out and put them in the lifter retainer in their proper place. Again, keep the lifters in order just for good practice. Repeat for the other side of the engine. Place a rag in each lifter section (4 sections on each side of the block) to keep debris out of the engine.

Constrictor, if anyone caused a problem, it was me rather than you. I admit to being fussy. And if, as cantdrv believed, I seemed condescending, I apologize.

Stop acting fussy. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

1) Heads have to come off. Lifter swap should be treated like a head swap.

2) take out the bolt that holds the lifter keeper thingie in, and then pull it up... Voila lifters come out.

PSJ,

I am being fussy for a good reason. You obviously have a lot of experience working on LS1 engines. I think it is important to not lead those with less experience into making expensive mistakes. At the very least you need access to torque specifications.

Gary Z, you could have answered his question more than once instead of posting useless and condescending bullshit. If you do not have an answer why enter the thread? <img border="0" alt="[cry]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

I was referring to Constrictor. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Try www.ls1howto.com for head swap info.

Constrictor got mad because nobody answered the post right away = fussy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

GaryZ's answer is ummmm not that great if we all took that advice we would not need LS1Tech. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I want all of you to stand in a row so I can run you all over at the same time.

IMO I would not change lifter unless I was going to pull the heads for other reasons...
