Default Oil Pressure

Alright, I started my car the other day, and no oil pressure. Cut the car off, checked that there was oil in the car, decided that since the car sounded fine and was running fine that it must be an electrical problem. Drove it to work and after about a minute of driving it started showing pressure. Got to work and did some searches on here and found out about the pressure relief valve sticking open. This sounds like it could be the problem, but what would be the best way to figure out if it is the pump or the electrical side. Also what are the benefits of getting and ls6 pump, can I buy it at a GM dealrship, will I need a part number. By the way the car is a 2000 formula, 6 speed with 24000 miles. Thanks

I had this happen a few times before the valve completely siezed up in my old motor, for peace of mind it might be time to get a new oil pump, and maybe do a cam swap while your down there.

If it still sounded fine, I would think that it was electrical. If you heard the lifters and such start clattering, then I would think the relief valve stuck open.

That is what I am thinking that if it was the relief valve and the engine wasnt getting any oil it would sound horrible, what is the best way to check the sending unit? Does it send a signal to the pcm or directly to the guage?

Mine never gave warning ( the oil pump relief valve sticking ) back in 2002; I had to have a new shortblock after that. In other words it's worth the effort to check the pump and sender now vs. paying for a new shortblock. Within seconds the bearings can get scored as well as the crank. Don't drive yours till you figure this out.

Anybody have any words of wisdom on the slp heavy duty pump? It is the most expensive out of the three that I have looked at, ls6 ported pump and the blueprinted and ported ls1 pump. So does the ls6 pump not have the relief valve problem?

I had the "Zero Oil Pressure" at startup happen to me twice within the first 10k of owning my car. GM wouldn't do crap. They blamed it on the sending unit. I changed the oil pump with a stock 2002+ pump, and it never happened since (47K miles now).

Just swap the pump... I'd bet it was the pressure relief valve.

I am looking through this formum and there are a lot of posts about people having oil pressure issues< what the hell is up. I have had an 85iroc and a 95Z28 before this and never once had any problems with the oil pump, then I get this damn near brand new firebird and within a month the oil pump craps out? Does anybody know why the ls1 has these issues? Is there a recall or anything? Just dosent make sense to me.

It's a known fault with 98-00. I have an official internal GM memo stating they know about it; they switched vendors after discovering the problem in 01 I believe.
