Default Shimming crane dual springs.

I bought a F13 cam and crane dual springs for Allan Futural. I originally hade comp 987 springs with titainum retainers. Allan told my the springs would work with the 987 retainers and spring seats. He didn't say anything about shimming the springs. I hear people are shimming the crane dual springs. Should I shim the springs or not. I'm down on power and 1/4 mile times from my 228/228 comp XER cam and 987 springs. Valvetrain seems louder also since cam swap.

I didnt think he was using Crane's anymore? The old ones have to be shimmed like .030 and the new ones like .080? Im using Manley's and I believe they are shimmed .030.

Allan recommend that spring for the F13 I bought a couple of months ago. I'm assuming I have the old springs.

Do u have the new Cranes? The ones with the stripes? Do you have stock heads? I just went through this with my AS heads. I think the best way of doing this would be this formula. 1.045(coil bind)+.060(gap before coil bind)+.xxx(lift) . For me this worked out to .075 though shim as my installed height was 1.8-ur gonna have to get one of those spring installed height checkers to be sure-u can't guess on this one. I hope this helps!

I have the old crane springs with stage two TEA heads machined for comp 987 dual springs. I was sent springs only. Allan told me to reuse my retainers/locks and spring seats.

The 987's are for a 1.5" spring seat while the Cranes are for a 1.29. I don't see how they would work-I have set of 987 and the cranes. I'lll check to see if they will work but I doubt it.

Do u have the Crane 144832's? If so Allan must of made a mistake-I just checked a 987 seat and retainer and it will not work. U need the seats and retainers that Crane sells for the 144832.

There is no way those will work with 987 retainers and seats. U need new reatiners and seats or a spring which will work with the 987 retainers and seats-look into the comp 977's or 978's. I would give Allan a call.

I took 987's off and replaced them with the Crane 832's myself. I don't see how the seats and retainers could be interchangable at all between the two. The 987's are considerably larger than the 832's are and I'm not sure how you even got them to work, must be a mis-understanding??

Don't think the 977's will work either since they are longer springs and would require a longer valve to work properly.

I will double check the part number.
I think allan gave me a crane spring with the correct diameter for my seats and retainers.

you guys need to go to a place that sells measuring tools. regardless of what allan futural says about an exact shim (..030), i promise you that every single one of your springs is a tad higher or lower by say .010. there is a tool that measures your installed valve height and your supposed to shim it accordingly to a certain specification that allan could probably tell you. that is the right way to do it...030 is just a safe round about that will be generic for everyone, but the right way is to use that tool if your going for it extra power. every little bit helps.

I found out I have the crane 99893 springs. Allan said to check install height. It should be 1.77 to 1.80. If it is in that range I won't need shims.

Get the Crane tool 99019-1, I will NEVER install a set of head again without checking with one of those.
