BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE PEN MAGNETS!!! I just did a cam swap on my car and I thought it was cheap insurance to use the pen magnets....bad idea! I had the autozone ones, and my friend put one in after about 8 were in, and it didn't click like a magnet touching the lifter....he pulled it out and there was no magent in the tip....spent two hours with lights and mirrors trying to decide if it had fell on top of the lifter. I don't think it did. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THAT THEY ARE ALL THERE BEFORE PUTTING IT IN. Check the tightness...they seem to be pressed in. I ended up taking the rest out and not using them AT ALL!
Wanna start it up, but it just snowed here..

Never heard of the magnet falling out of the pen part like that, but its definitly something good to check.
The magnet trick is still 10x safer than no magnets at all.

If they are threaded on, another option would be red locktite.

I am with JMX, they are a good idea.
Just because each of them were not verified having serviceable magnets attached to them does not mean 'they are a bad idea.'
Always check a part or tool before using it. I am pretty sure you can take the pocket clip off of some of them too. So check they are not about to fall off as well.
Pen magnets rock for picking up all of the damn bolts you drop, and help lift the lifters with no problem.

Had the same thing happen on my cam install, one came out the end. Fortunately it was easily recovered,& no harm done. If you use the pen magnets to hold the lifters up, be sure to check them first! or you could get

Chances are unless it was one of the back ones it would end up on the windage tray below the crank. I am not an f-body guy , but I think you have to jack the front of the engine up to get it off. You should read one of the write ups on cam install. There is allot of good info in them . For instance spinning the cam after the pushrods are removed to put the lifters in the plastic holders.
I forgot to add you would also then have to pull that head to reinstall. The lifters are not accessible through the valley. So in short don't do that
