**CAUTION** PEN MAGNETS **CAUTION**
Wanna start it up, but it just snowed here..
The magnet trick is still 10x safer than no magnets at all.
Tack weld the tip to the shaft, and no more worries about that. I'd rather have them there, than risk dropping a lifter.

Good idea, or silver solder it on. If they are threaded on, another option would be red locktite.
Just because each of them were not verified having serviceable magnets attached to them does not mean 'they are a bad idea.'
Always check a part or tool before using it. I am pretty sure you can take the pocket clip off of some of them too. So check they are not about to fall off as well.
Pen magnets rock for picking up all of the damn bolts you drop, and help lift the lifters with no problem.

I'm doing my asa hotcam install this weekend. My question is what do you do if you do drop a lifter into the oil pan , how would i go about fixing thaT.

Drop the pan. Chances are unless it was one of the back ones it would end up on the windage tray below the crank. I am not an f-body guy , but I think you have to jack the front of the engine up to get it off. You should read one of the write ups on cam install. There is allot of good info in them . For instance spinning the cam after the pushrods are removed to put the lifters in the plastic holders.
I forgot to add you would also then have to pull that head to reinstall. The lifters are not accessible through the valley. So in short don't do that
