My AIR valves have clogged several times already (2000 Z28 SS).
When this happens, especially in the summer, there is also a loud
noise coming from under the hood when the car is hot, was parked
and gets started up again, while the air pump runs.

I had some '94 air valves from a previous CHevy Caprice which were
brand new and fit. They passed more air than new stockers so I put
them on. SO far so good, no clogging yet.

I also noticed that after I removed the last clogged stock air valve, that,
after them sitting on my work bench for a while, they seemd to "dry"
out and pass a lot of air again (you can blow thorugh them from on side).

The felt paper "valve" inside seems to be really crappy and soak up
moisture and oil fumes or whatever.

I had the same thing. That part is NOT a $40.00 item, though...that is the dealer rip-you-off price.
There is one A.I.R. check valve for each exhaust manifold. I got the replacements from Autozone for $9.98, part #779-2929 , I believe.
It takes probably 15-20 minutes to replace both of them, requires a couple big wrenches or, I just used some channel-locks. Really easy !
