GM takes them out from the bottom as described.

If you have access to a lift I'd really consider doing it that way.

Now dodge that while pulling it out. You have to angle it and its more of a 3 person job like that (1 working the engine lift and 2 people to manuever the motor out of the car. Not to mention you have to take the hood and a lot more steuuf from out under the hood

Pull off the heads, intakes, radiator and all the electrical conections. I would even remove the headers to give you more room to work. Then jack the front end up about 2 1/2', remove the driveshaft, unbolt the tranny crossmember after diconecting all connections, then the six bolts that hold the k-member in. Drop it down and slide out the engine plus tranny still connected out the side. Disconnect the brakes as well before hand. Dropping the engine from the bottom will save you from doing any damage to the car by trying to balance out the top. Good luck.

Well the best way is through the bottom hands down but if you dont have acess to a lift its no big deal ! My buddy and I pulled mine through the top with the tranny attached but we pulled the heads first. It took us from 10am to 7pm to pull the motor and drop the new one in which still is not to slow considering no power tools were used either plus we didnt take the hood off either then it was running the next day after we pluged everything back up

i took mine out of the bottom. with absolutely no help from friends and no manuals or the sort, and it took me about a full day to figure out how to drop it out, while disconnecting everything. it would be very easy to drop it if u had a manaual (helms, etc.) and it took me about 16 hrs to put it back in with a couple of friends and NO manual. but now that i know how to do everything, i could prob drop it out in about 5-6 hrs. oh ya, i did mine in my garage without a lift, just jack stands and a 3-ton jack. got the car up high enough to remove the 10 carriage bolts (6 in k-mem and 4 in tanny mem) and to disconnect the suspension and jacked the car up off of the motor. then i just lowered the motor and tranny down with 2 jacks and slid it out. Very interesting experiance.

Some of these people sure are making it sound difficult coming out the top. It's no too bad. Took me like 6-7 hopurs first time I ever did it completely by myself with hand tools. Air tools and a partner would make it about 3-4 hours. Heads can stay on. That's where I connect the chains.

Remember folks, if you drop it out the bottom, you have to get the car re aligned. personally, the top is the way i do it. last one took about 2.5 hours of actualy labor between 2 people w/ a lift.

John Campbell used to have some good pics on his site. That's where I got the general idea of how I wanted to do it.

I dropped mine out the bottom... VERY easy... I did it all by myself, no lift, but I had air tools Took me about 6 hours, and I know I could do it much faster if I did it again. Make sure to leave the driveshaft attached to the engine, or cover the tailshaft with plastic, otherwise all the oil goes all over the floor

I haven't put it back in yet so I don't have any advice!

This thread reminds me of an learning experience that took place about 20 yrs ago. I needed to pull an engine, but had never done so. There were no jacks, hoists, creepers, cherry pickers etc. available to me(didn't know what they were!). A friend told me that the engine and tranny could be pulled using a come-a-long(sic) hanging from three long thick tree branches tied together like a teepee at the top, and tied leg to leg. I thought he was crazy. But, after removing the hood, radiator and related connections, the motor and tranny were easily extracted. It did take an extra pair of hands to tip the tranny tailshaft down as the unit came out. Also, the car had to be gently rolled back to make room for the removal.

You do not have to get the car realigned when you put the drop it out from the bottom. The 6 bolts that hold the K member to the body can not be adjusted an anyway. If you messed round with the A arms you would have to.

If/when I pull my engine, I'm pulling it out the top. Hell....once you put a Big Block and 700-R4 trans into an Austin Heally 100-6 (can we say SMALL!!!!!!), a Camaro with a small block (LS1) has LOTS of room!!!!

Drop the K-member....no thank you... I did that once (installing the BMR K-member ) and don't want to have to go through all the trouble of trying to get the alighnment close enough to drive it again.....

I plan to remove the intake and headers (probubly leave the heads on) and just pull right out through the top. Just to be safe, I will remove the hood (it will also make getting the engine lift in there.

Chris

I've done it both ways, and I prefer pulling it out the top.. Just remove the balancer, water pump, and intake.. Run the chain TIGHT across from the back of one head to the front of the other, and it goes in/out with room to spare.

I've pulled a fully assembled motor out from the top, with the hood still on the car. It's no big deal.
