I have gotten differnt oil filters the last 3 oil changes so this is good to know which is better. Of course if the oil filter does its job and traps the dirt etc. it could eventually clog up the oil filter then doesn't the engine avoid the filter?

Normal Fram filters are about the worst thing you could put on your car. The HP frams are good though. Most people believe the Wix filters are the best (thats what that Nascar Napa one is -- just relabled).

From what I have seen the Fram's are very restrictive so most of your oil ends up bypassing the filter through the bypass valve. The most readily available filter that filters well yet is not overly restrictive is the K&N filter. Amsoil filters actually filter a little better without much added restriction, but are harder to find. Perhaps Patman will chime in here... he sent me a link a while back that compared filters, but I lost it.

Here is a good oil filter study:

I like the K&N the best. I've gotten excellent oil analysis results using these filters too.

K&N is definitely a good filter, about $8. Mobil 1 is also a good filter for about the same as the K&N.
Don't buy the cheap fram or purolator if you are using synthetic oil. If you are paying for good oil use a good filter.

The Mobil1 fiter used in the comparison on the link above was almost 2X as restrictive as the K&N and Amsoil, with the filter medium itself being over 50% more restrictive. This means that even if it filters just as well as the other (maybe a little better than the K&N) it will still allow much more oil to bypass the filter altogether and go unfiltered.
