Building a 408ci
I blew my stock 346 from my camaro about a month ago, and now I want to get a motor that will produce a lot of power. My friend just got a 408 but he only produced 460rwhp seems low to me b/c I've seen other people dyno more. Anyways I was thinking of getting a 408ci motor. I want to get a turbo but $$$ issues. Does anyone now a good manufacturer that build good quality 408ci motors. I'm looking to spray or go turbo on it. Also What type of set ups are guys with 408 runing and how much hp are they getting. Please let me know what type of heads and cam will produce the biggest power in either turbo or sprayed. Thanks

We would be happy to help you with your 408. With the LS2 block out we can offer you an aluminum or iron block. With the LS2 block we will only be able to get to 402 ci, but will still make great power. We have a very nice race shop that builds nothing but race motors, and has done a fair share of LS1's. If you plan to go turbo, or lots of nos you will need a cylinder head that flows well. We hope soon to have some of the first AFR 225's in stock, and can offer you a great price. As for a cam shaft what we would like to do is take everything into consideration (your mods), and have a custom cam built for your car. Gear ratio, car weight, ci, compression, there are alot of different things you have to consider when picking out a cam. Let me know if I can help!!

im building a 408 motor and turboing it as well. expect to pay a lot of $$$$. my goals are to have it be able to handle 20lbs when needed, and daily driven around 14lbs.
FMS is building my setup, i hear they are the best around.

thanks as soon as I get some $ at the end of the year I'll be looking from someone to build it, for shure I'll give you a call to get a quote. Just wondering how much$ will it cost for a 408 with heads and cam for n20 and how much power should i make just on motor.

thats whats im still debating. im thinking either a used qmp t76 setup, or a new CAS tt with t44's, but i dont know if the t44's will be enough turbo for my motor.

i am also thinking of a stroker for my 01 ws6 m6.i have seen that slp makes a 402. i was wondering what is the difference from a 402 and and a 408. i need help chossing a motor.i have all all bolt ons.which motor would i have the best performance from.

When considering a project like bigger cubic inches and the whole top end package be prepaired to have some major cash laying around.
For the cheepest shortblock with eagle crank and core charge you are looking around 4500 dollars. If you go with better parts it will cost more money. The Launti crank is about 1000 dollars more and the Callies crank is in between the two.
As far as heads go plan on a solid 2500 dollars here.
A motor with that many cubes HAS TO BREATH.
Without very good stage 2.5 or stage 3 heads your almost wasting you money by going bigger. Cam is 400 dollars, ARP Bolts, head gaskets, ported oil pump, any sensor's you might need, pushrods, timing chain etc. All this will add up very quickly.
Then you need to make sure your exhaust is SOLID.
Nice headers probally at least 1 7/8" will run you 700 or better.
True duals or someing custom for the least amount of power loss isn't cheep. Ported TB or 90mm setup (which I would suggest) can tack on another 200-1200 depending on which route you go.
Injectors because you will now run out of fuel.
Tuning is about 500 and is a must.
Then you need to consider your drivetrain.
Will you POS A4 handle the power?
HELL NO. And even the M6 wont like all the extra power.
You will need gears, clutch, flywheel for the M6 or a converter for the A4. All in all you can see this is a expensive project and will kill the wallet.

The difference is in the bore.
The 402 is a stock 6.0 motor with a 4" crank where as the 408 is a 6.0 block bored to 4.030 which is 30 over and a 4" crankshaft.
The 408 will make a little more power, and torque should be very similar.

There is really no "best", LOTS of good pistons out there. Cant go wrong with a set of JE's. We could build you a 402, 408, 427. With either an Iron or LS2 block. Price will depend on you and what internals you want. We use lots of Eagle stuff, cant beat the price and have yet to have any issues with them. Lunati's stuff is bad *** also, Let me know if I can do anything for you.

If you're looking for a setup that you can make 600HP with, Eagle would be more than plenty. I would recommend Eagle for anything up to about 800HP. After that, it would be ideal to upgrade to something a little stronger. Peace of mind goes a long ways. Callies makes a couple of nice LS1 cranks. They typically retail for about $1,600. If you really want the piece of mind, or you plan to make power numbers of 1000, the Lunati is where you want to be. There are other crankshafts available for the LS1, but for the most part they're overkill unless you need a VERY light crank, or you're going to be doing endurance racing. For those applications you should call Sonny Bryant or Moldex. Prices on these cranks can range between $4,000 - $6,000!
As far as pistons go, you can't really go wrong with JE or SRP, especially if you're looking for a street cruiser. If you're looking to build something that can run with the fastest of them, Wiseco or Mahle would be a good choice. They might also be worth upgrading to if you don't want to have any worries, but I haven't seen any problems with anything from JE or SRP.
As far as connecting rods, it's the same story as the cranks. If you're looking for your car to be a street cruiser, Eagle's going to be your best bet. Those H-Beam rods they sell are much tougher than what people think. The Lunati Pro-Billet rods are also very nice, but they're about twice as much as the Eagle stuff. If you're looking to make anywhere over 800 I would recommend stepping up to the Lunati rods.
