We dropped the trans after figuring out we had to get WAY high up to pull both. Took an extra 20 minutes with 2 of us. Check my sig for pics of the engine coming out. The only bad thing that happened was we snapped the oil sending unit off like almost everyone else on this board does.

Upper-most bolt holes in the heads. These are normally called the "accessory holes" and with a long enough chain and proper bolts, can lift the engine out easy. If you can also get your hands on an engine lift swivel, it makes the job much easier.

When I pulled/reinstalled my motor, I was able to do it by putting the car up on 4 ramps (got the gray plastic ramps from AutoZone). I mounted my chains to the heads on the accesory bolt holes. You want the chain as short and tight as possible.

Assuming you have removed the valve covers, all accessories, radiator, fan & ac assembly, there is no need to remove the crank pulley. If you don't want to take the radiator assembly out, you should remove the crank pulley. Make a slight lift on the motor so you can take the motor mount bolts loose. Then remove the right (passenger side) motor mount pedestal from the K-member. The motor should come right out.

Good luck and remember to be patient. It's not as difficult as it seems.

One other thing, We used a creaper with a small piece of plywood on it for the tailshaft of the trans to roll on. We also found that by tying a couple ropes to the trans (pull one through the shifter hole and one out the front of the car) we could guide the trans in/out with ease.

pull it from the bottom, its a breeze! Then you dont have to worry about clearing the tranny on the ground. Just some advise take it or leave it. i wrote a post about my engine removal, search for it if your interested.

I gotta back Inspector up here. From the bottom is definately the way to go if you have the facilities. I had planned on putting the motor and trans back in from the bottom, but I didn't have enough room to pull it off. If & when, the next time will be from the bottom.

Inspector12 - So you lifted the car with the engine hoist? That's clever.. what type of webbing or straps or those and where did you secure them to?

Those are 1500lb ratchet straps I used 3. One on each side of the bumper support and one around the core support.

It's so easy to drop the engine out of the bottom. Did it on an LS1 in 2.5 hours, first time, mostly by myself.

I used (2) jacks, (4) jackstands, (2) rhinoramps and took my time. Did it all in a tiny garage, too, even lowered it all out by myself.

Thanks for the info. Are you guys dropping the engine and trans together or separate?
