That would be that stock cam. Look stock springs are good to what .500 lift. I dont know of a cam out there with that small of a lift other than the stock cam. If you will notice everone of use that has a cam has a set or aftermarkt spings. It is just the name of the game. You have to pay to play.

I agree with goober35. You MUST change the springs when swapping the cam. Stock LS1 springs are simply not strong enough.

First mod would be a stall, You have to have a stall for a larger cam.....

The TR224 is a great all-around cam.

Like everyone else has said, you need to change springs for a bigger cam. Depending on what you want, the 224 is a great all around cam, and then you have the MS3 and t rexs out there.

You "need" two things before you get a cam. Headers and a new converter. Without headers you will choke the cam, and without the converter you will be stuck at very low RPM's where any decent sized cam does not make any power. Also, and this is more important the larger the cam is, you will have troubles with the idle raised because it will pull on the stock, very tight converter.

with that gear ratio any larger cam is gonna kill you... get to a set of 3.42 gears, and at least a 3000 stall, preferably a 3600 or so... then get a nice cam. Ive put converter autos with stock gears in the 11s with just the LS6 cam and springs, then DEEP in the 11s with a 75 shot on top of it... but my usual reasoning with cams is if youre gonna do it, DO IT BIG! everyone I know that hasnt usually regrets their cam and wants bigger later!

An "evil" cam will be choked by shorties. If you want an "evil" cam you should get LT's first. I know that it's hard to wait, trust me, I've had my car for 3.5 years and just ordered my cam yesterday. I am not totally sure what would happen with a big cam on shorties, it could be done i'm sure, but you wouldn't get the full benefit of your cam.

thanx,
i kinda figured.
i hate to wait.
plus try explaining to the wife that u need to pay a grand for a few extra horses, when she knows that a cam would add alot more for a lil more money.

so i cold pull it off for a while, or its a bad idea all around?

I would do a search for cams and shorties, try different searches/forums see what you come up with. If it doesn't answer your question, or someone who KNOWS doesn't post in this, I would start a new thread about it. Chances are that a "what cam" thread won't get too many reads by people who answer those questions a lot. (trust me, i know that from experience as well)

Edited: Are you on stock converter? If so, you NEED a converter first.

ABSOLUTELY go above a 2800 stall. True stall o ~3500+ would be a good minimum
. (vig3200, SSF3500, SY3500 for street tires, SS3600)

3.73 will be good. I'm thinking that SSonYourSix didn't realize you had 3.73's ~3500 stall (or bigger, if you can take it), 3.73's, and a big cam will be just fine.
