Default NY emmisions test..

Is ours a sniffer or do they just check for engine codes??

The 1996+ test, they check for codes.

the "emmissions" test is pretty simple. cars 99-01 will pass if there are no check engine codes present in the computer, or its memory. Along with that your computer has different monitors, you can fail up to two monitors and still pass.
on 01-up everything is the same except you can only fail one monitor. no sniffer or nothing

it also checks the readyness, u can't just turn off a code/light and expect it to pass, it checks for drivecycles after the light was shut off

They should if you have legit front sensors and sims in the rear.

I guess It would depend on the shop. We still have to do a Visual to check for all installed emissions parts. Here's a quick note FYI. Alot of the shops have started to become **** about stuff, mine included. At my shop you would not pass. Later John

NY metro area, long island, westchester and rockland counties all still have the sniffer, until they officially start the NYVIP OBD-II testing program, April 1, 2005. Upstate NY is currently running the OBD-II test as of Dec 1.

i wasn't correcting your grammar, i was calling NYS dumb for comming out with an emmissions test without a sniffer! oh well thats good for us who do not use cats!

If you use a shop with a decent guy you might get away with it. The Place where I go said he wouldnt have a prob as long as he can do a quick visual and see that there are cats there.Its time for me to go to the junk yard and get some converter covers.
