Default which heads are best to port for a 98 ls1???

I have a 98 Ls1 and want to port my heads but do not know which heads will give me the most power. I initially wanted to port the stock heads but do not know which heads port bigger the stock heads, ls6 heads, or 6.0 block heads?

If your heads have the perimeter valve cover bolt holes, you'll need to decide if you want to switch to the later center bolt valve covers in order to run the later LS6 or 6.0l heads. The heads on the '98 cars all had the perimeter valve cover bolt arrangement and the coil pack mounts are different. The casting numbers located on the front passenger side should read #806 . That being said, the ports on the the LS6 and 6.0l heads make better power than the early LS1's and are very similar into each other in stock form. It's best to have the heads ported to fit your specific combination so that you don't have to spend more than you need to. Also, consider your camshaft, rear gear ratio and transmission to optimize your setup.

Good luck,

Richard
