Question TR224 w/ 1.8 rockers? CAN IT BE DONE?

Did a search and couldn't find the answer.Fixed my 10 bolt and ready for some cam action! I thought I had bent a PR some time back and replaced with hardened ones with new LS6 springs and did the Harlan Sharp 1.8's while I was in there. I didn't think I would ever do a cam in the future. With life's costs I will not do FI. Anyways, I went to Thunder Racing's website to order the cam and the notes said that because of the fast ramp rates 1.8's are not recomended. I could call them, but I wanted to ask the pros on this-- LS1 TECH! Any suggestions?

I do not think that you can do that cam with those rockers.....1.7's is all you could do I believe.

Do you have you heart set on that cam...or can you pick something on a different lobe that would work with those rockers?

You could but it'd bring the lift to the .596 range, which wouldn't work with the LS6 springs. I know you don't want to do this, but I'd go back to stock rockers, sell your 1.8s, and use that money to get a bigger cam and better springs. Just my opinion.

Ls6 springs won't take the added lift.
You can take the rockers off and run a GMPP ASA cam on 1.7's using those springs. That makes good power.

I knew that springs would need to be changed. 918's most likely. My heart is not set on it but I have heard nothing but good things about that cam. Crane makes cams that will work with 1.8's, but none match the specs of the TR. Also, with out touching the head bolts--stock heads, what is the max lift before I would have to flycut? 580 ish?

Max lift on 1.7's would be the Thunder's TRex cam, TSP Magic Stick 3, etc.
Well into the .6xx lift range.

I gottcha., but I'm not trying to get the max lift. I want to use use my 1.8's with a moderate cam. I wanted to know what the max lift would be without touching the stock heads. No milling, just scotch on the rocks . I wanted t o use the TR cam more than any out there. I was hoping someone would say YES you can and that they were using it and not to worry. seriously.

u could get 1 of the older style comp cams with less lift than the XE lobes... part # 54-418-11... 224/228-.534/.537-112... with 1.8's, ur lift would be .565/.569... check the top section of cams: http://www.compcams.com/information/...971_Page-3.jpg

Damn, almost forgot!! Does anyone know what the max lift would be with the stock heads- never touched, milled, or removed from the car? All the lift figures for the cams I have been looking at puts me between 560 to 590. Am I going to #$%^ up all of the valves? Anyone? I am not worried about lifting the valve to high heaven-- until it kisses the piston.

You could run 1.8's but:
1- need other springs
2- Need to dial in your PVC (might need to change your ICL)

in general, anything over .550 lift and 1.8's are not recomended.
except for CRANE accelerated lift rockers.

You should have asked the pros at LS1 tech before adding the rockers...

Anyway, Comp has some low lift cams that might work since you already have the rockers in, and Lunati does too in durations near a TR224.

Might want to check that out before spending any money.

Check VINCI also, "Asp Kicker, boss, boss 2, " all are cams that would fit those rockers.

I have been lurking this board since 2001!!!!!!!!!! I added the rockers because I never thought about cammin' it. I always planned on FI. I changed most of the valvetrain because of a bent PR, extra ratio was a bonus with the blower I planned on. Now I want to do some wrenching and thats were the cam thoughts enter. Thanks everyone for the advice, I know about springs, I was simply wondering if I could get away with xxx lift with xxx duration and the searches didn't get the answers I wanted.
