Default What kind of cam without Headers?

Ok, heres the deal.

2004 GTO
Planned mods.....
Ported Throttle body
ASP underdrive pulley
CAI....already done
Vig or Yank 3400-3600 stall converter
Shift kit...maybe
Trans cooler
HP tuners
Full exhaust with x pipe, no cats, 2.5 inch.

I am thinking about doing a cam. My question is, what kind of cam would you guys recomend for a car with stock exhaust manifolds? Full Length headers for this thing cost $1000 or over, I am not paying it. Maybe later down the road if Mac, BBK, or Hooker, etc make some cheaper headers I will think about it. Do you guys think I need a cam with some more exhaust duration to make up for the manifolds? I am thinking about a 220-224 duration at .050 for the intake, should I get something split pattern like a 224/228? Does anybody make a 220/228?

with no headers, i would say either spend the money elsewhere, or get a small cam (the gains might not be worth the hassle/$$$ of the cam swap)

I would put in a gm hotcam. I think it was designed to make gains with stock heads/manifolds.

I am thinking pretty hard about the hotcam. Its cheap and the specs fit what I want pretty well. Does anybody know how the hotcam idles? I wouldn't mind some lope.

The HotCam and the 220/230 Lunati cam have a little too much overlap to be ideal with stock manifolds. I've done lots of research and run lots of simulations and the best combination I've found in a cam with stock manifolds is a Cam Motion custom cam: 217/225 .588/.588 113LSA, 115ICL cam (that means 2 degrees retarded). It has -5 degrees of overlap @.050 and has an intake closing point of around 44 degrees ABDC which is ideal for making killer power in a 346 LS1. The tighter LSA will make excellent power in the mid-range and the later intake closing point means the cam will make peak power around 6200 and easily run to 6500 rpm before it starts running out of breath. Ideal in my opinion. It's what I plan on putting in my TA.

Something with 10 or so more degrees of exhaust duration and a wide lobe separation would be ideal for exhaust manifolds. This will open the exhaust valve fairly early and allow a great deal of time for exhaust fumes to be spent. You will want a good deal of time for exhaust gasses to be spent because you will be giving up a lot in terms of exhaust scavenging with manifolds. Also this will provide very little overlap. Overlap in a combination with poor exhaust is a big no no, you will get too much reversion and no benefits of overlap. Good luck.

I run a mti stealth 2. With a 3500 stall and 3800 pounds weight. It runs like stock and sounds like stock. I lost no bottom end because of my tci 3500ssf.I gained a huge amount of power from 3500 up. This cam pulls to 6500 rpm. I idel at 800 and it sounds quiet with no shake.

If there's even a 10% chance of buying headers, down the road, don't buy a small cam now. You'll just replace it when you install the headers.
