Unhappy starting the spring swap out wrong

well i get the first spring off pretty easy, pull the seal and retainer then the valve slipped. it didnt fall all the way out, its still in the guide thing, but what can i do to push it back up? i had the timint dots lighned up so i dont know how it fell so far, piston 1 should be TDC anyway i'm gonna switch to the straw method.

but in the mean time, how can i get this back up short of removing the heads? this must be the cam install from hell, please give me some advice..

turn the engine by hand and the piston should push the valve back up.

Exactly. In fact turn the engine over to bring the piston up to TDC for each intake/exhaust spring set. This will prevent the valves from slipping all the way down and is much faster than the air compressor method.

well on the ls1howto.com guide it says you can judge tdc by the dots on the timing chain. that was wrong

Well if you want to you can use a Good pen magnet if they are the stock valves and see if that will pick it up the one I have from Home Depot I know it would it is a strong SOB. But like the other two or three guys said just turn it over slowly with a 24mm socket and a ratchet and watch witch way it is going up or down and if it goes up then keep going until you get it. Or if it is going down stop and go the other direction until it gets up . Good luck.

alright i got that taken care of but...

when i spun the crank i noticed metal flakes all over the timing chain, i'm guessing that i just have to take the oil pump off, wack the bottom sprocket on more, then put the oil pump back on? i have the shims that came with the timing chain (rollmaster double)

also, what precautions should i take to make sure i dont get any metal in my engine?

If you aligned the dots right and followed the instructions, then you will not have a problem.

Quite a few people have used that proceedure and have had no problems. I myself have used it at least 4-5 times.

Are you sure you are on piston 1 (driver side) and not piston 2 (passenger side) ?

Just did this 2 days ago as well. The install document is correct and the valve movement should only be less than a 1/4" if the piston is truely at TDC. I couldn't believe how easy it was. Not knocking you just very pleased how accurate and dtailed it was about the spring part. Careful with that Oring. I guess you got the pickup tube bolt out of the pan????

Also, once you are done with 1 and 6, just position your ratchet with the 24mm socket at 12 oclock and rotate it to 3 oclock. You will then see the CAM gear move half that and it will be at the dot will be at the 730 position. Once done with that set. Repeat
