Default What cam is this?

Hi there guys,

I just got a 02 ZO6, I pulled the cam it had and it had an engraving on it that says
LS CHS 290 283 HR 112 512089

Anyone knows what cam is this? I mean what is the @50 numbers?

I pulled this cam because it idled like crap and sometime dies. Also, I used to get a SES light because of it (I am thinking a big cam) I did not have LS1Edit so tuning was a problem! Final solution was to just change it! I pulled it out and put a TR227 in there and all the of nightmare left! No more surging and all the other crap! Now, it just drives very well and it is very cool in traffic and yet pulls like hell!

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply,

I have no idea if it was comp or not. all what was engraved on it I have put it on my last post. But man, 240/233 that is something that I would put on a 383 stroker!

Yep! I calculated them by subtracting 50 degrees from the .050 numbers. Not 100% accurate, but usually close. Sorry, I should have said that.

Yes, but if he wants to know exact numbers, he could degree it with a dial indicator and lathe real easy.

You also need a degree wheel, or some way of measuring shaft angle accurately. A lathe is just one way to solidly support the cam while you rotate it and take the measurements. Dial indicators are only $10 at Harbor Frieght. The lowest place on the cam is the base circle, the highest place it the lift. So zero the dial indicator on the base circle, take the highest reading and multiply by the rocker ratio (1.7) and you have the lift. Do that for one exhaust and one intake. The number of degrees you read off between 50 thou lift at the start of the lobe and 50 thou at the end is the duration.

Ruf, you got a vette huh...and now you have the same cam mine has!

If you think you can settle for knowing the lift only, you can go get a cheap dial caliper or digital caliper somewhere for $10-$20 and just find the smallest measurement on the lobe and subtract that from the biggest measurement on the lobe. Then mult by 1.7 and you'll get your valve lift number (like 0.600").

I'd guess it'd be specs close to a G5X3, simply because its a common cam...especially in texas it seems.

Thanks guys for your help!

NVR4GET, it is black ZO6, I got it from a used car dealer in Austin. it had no headers but had a cam. The car was very clean and in great shape. it picked up like crazy, but I did not like the cam for a daily driver!

jmx, how are you man? How is your car? Thanks for you info! I will try that. I got this cam in this engine for now! I am building a new stroker for the ZO6. Man, 477 rwhp from my SS with a 382 is not bad! Let us see what the LS2 block and AFR heads make!
