Default Is the TSP 231/237 the cam i need

i would like to cam my car in the next couple of months but i want some opinions on which cam best suits my needs. all mods are in my sig and the car is a daily driver. i talked to Brian@TSP when i ordered my headers and he said the 231/237 was probably what i was looking for. i want my car to have a mean idle and run hard. what kind of 1/4 and dyno numbers are people putting down with this cam? roughly what type of power am i putting to the wheels with current setup? by the way i have 3.23's in the rear. thanks for any help

how much difference is there? will i like how it sounds? TSP's site isn't real informative with the cam specs and description of how it performs.

I think you would be very happy with that cam. I'm running it in my daily driver now. I ran the cam with a TCI 3500 and 3.23 gears for a while too and the car was a blast to drive. It has the idle you are looking for and will put you in your seat when you are on it! I have run 12.20's with a 5100 DA! With some good air your car should fly! By the way, it likes nitrous with that split duration if you are planning on spraying it in the future.

NSTYLS198,
Our mods are very similar. I bought the TSP 233/239 with the PRC valvespring kit. It is in the process of being put in right now. Once it is done I will give you some feedback on this cam. I will also be running on a 100 wet nitrous shot.

im not a fan of the 231/237's lack of torque. and with the new and more aggressive lobes of the 233/233 and 233/239 i really dont see no reason to get the 231/237 anymore.

I've got the 231/237, and the torque does suck. But I don't drag race often, so torque isn't a big priority for me. IMO, torque just makes you spin too much off the line. From a roll, w/ ported heads I pull strong...I mean strong.

To the thread starter, get some 4:10's and you won't even notice the lack of torque w/ that cam.

yes, gears will cure a lack of low end but personally i dont like having to "crutch" a setup.

the tsp 231/237 uses really mild lobes, softer then XE so there great for spring life, 918's or PP/PRC duals will work fine. its been discussed but i dont remember the ramp rate of the 233/233 or 233/239 off hand but i know there fairy aggressive. but with the PP/PRC golds there shouldnt be a problem. as far as numbers check the dyno section, there have been results posted.

I'm running the 231/237, I have changed to a 3.73 gear and a 3800 converter.

High torque isn't as important for drag racing... torque's more important for street driving. You want sustained peak hp for drag racing... where is the car going to spend most of the time in a race? Over 5k rpms... so that's what you want to look at. Also, you want the curve to stay flat as possible after peak... if the power falls off abruptly right after, then it isn't doing you a whole lot of good either.

Torque can help you get off the line, but that's also what gears, tires, and suspension are for... if you match gears to not only get you off the line fast, but also to keep you close to your peak hp, then you're doing well with your setup.

I agree the 231/237 is not a torquey cam... however, while I only got an extra 15 rwtq peak after installing my TSP 231/237 cam, at 6k rpms it's making 50 more rwtq and 50 more rwhp than my bolt-on only setup did... and of course even more than that at 6500+ rpms where I spin the engine to when I race.

its not hard to make huge power after 6k with just about any mild sized cam. JMX showed that a few years back with his ls6 cam graph, gained 49rwhp over stock @ 6500.

but yes, you can stall/gear and setup everything around a lack of tq. like you said it ultimately depends on the application. Smokin01Ta aint really making that much tq with his trex but he's currently holding the title of fastest cam only 6sp.

I'd think since its a daily driver you'd want more torque than the 231/237. If you do get the 231/237 get some gears otherwise it will feel like a dog on the street.

You do want gears with this cam, definitely... if you're not looking to upgrade gears or anything, I'd stick with something that peaks lower in the rpm band (maybe around stock or a little higher).

Yup, my 3:73 ratio isn't enough for my 231/237. Wish I had 4:10's.

Either way, this cam is the shiznit.

I totally agree. I'm pretty happy with my 231/237. If I had money to throw around i'll spring for the 233/239.
