Default Found out Dealer thougts on oil consumption problem!

Hey guys I think this is in the right section.

I went to a dealer and talked with the parts department about a new PCV valve for my 99 SS. The salesman was very cool and said that they have been using the PCV from the 5.3 trucks. He brought out both and the 5.3 vertion only has a pin hole size opening. He said that GM won't recognize that the 2000 to 2002 Camaros have problems, but they come out with this new PCV for the trucks and was told to use it on our cars.

We both found this very interesting. I didn't buy either one yet. I figured I'd share this info with you guys, even though more than likely you know it already.

Hopefully this info helps some of you guys out. Also should I still get the original PCV for my 99.

Thanks!

Also, he offered all this information without me asking anything which I thought was just amazing given my normal dealership experiences.

The valve doesn't do anything. It won't help. I've tested it. They are just trying to appease(sp?) you. The problems with oil consumption on these motors have more to do with the source on the pcv, low tension oil rings, shallow valve covers, etc.

I know, amazing right!!! It was Jupiter Chevy on 635 and Jupiter.

I'm not saying the shop is any different then the rest (I'll never take my car back) ... but if you just need parts then go in and ask for Brian. He's a really cool guy.

So 4mulaJoe, should I just get the normal one for my 99.

Sorry the story turned out to be but I thought it was interesting that the info was offered and recognized by the parts department but not GM.

Aaagghh, It's friday and I can taste the beer already!!! Mmmm Beeerrr!!!

As a GM tech i can tell you the best way to control oil consumption on F-bods is to drive car the way you get best mileage, lugging it whenever possible. Save mid and hi rpm for full throttle driving only. The radial tension on second ring and oil expander are very low drag and will only clear properly at 2k rpm and less, when hi vacuum in cylinders exists. Under loaded driving rings work perfectly, if you see oil smoke from car under full throttle driving its because oil in intake has been reintroduced into air stream.

So I am supossed to buy a hot rod and keep it under 2 grand.I have taken off like this with my new baby in the car,Do you realize that suvs or these big 1 tons take off quicker from lights than that.Even a little old lady took me threw the intersection tring to keep the revs down.Just my .02.

Either use that valve or the one the dealer gives you, or the 99 cent one you get from napa. The valve isn't going to be a big deal. LS1derfull is correct. After a while you will get used to it. Just add oil often. 2 stock shortblocks for me. Both burn oil.

So you say the problem is with weak rings. I plan to build a second engine for my car with all forged Lunati parts. What rings should I use to avoid this problem?

Thanks

I read the GM prepared service bulletin and a mag article specifically addressing LS1 oil comsumption from the GM designers of this little marvel ....

It said GM did a survey of the owners who had this problem and determined that it occurrs as a result of people's driving habbits....(It can't be the poor design of GM engines, right?)

They said oil consumption happens when people drive around town at high RPMs with little load on the engine.

The rings and piston land groves on the NEW engines will be changed so that this no longer happens...(WOW - Now that is GM progress in action!)

So if you have high oil consumption (i) stop driving your car around town at high RPM in a high gear with no load or (ii) buy a new car with the correct rings and pistons. (Technically, if you already have high oil consumtion, it is probably too late for the former action!)

The latter choice will make GM shareholders' very happy; after all, the economy stinks and they need to keep selling cars...

...have a nice day...

Low tension rings are free horsepower. They've been using them in racing for awhile. Having excessive oil pressure (high volume pumps) will contribute to the problem. Using low thermostats, is also another thing that is a contributor. It causes fuel wash in the cylinders, and increases ring wear. Most engines run their best at around 220 degrees. I raised my thermost on my LS1 to 215, and picked up ponies. It would be interesting to know how many of you are using a high volume oil pump. Alot of you use oil that's also too thick, and that's another problem. Hmmmm........

my 98 ate oil when i was racing it, (high RPMs) i ran the 1/4 25 times in a row and used 1 quart of oil, i went to a remote place at the track to add oil where now one could see me. 3-4 quarts every 2000 miles, but when i was driving "normal" i bearly uses any oil at all. My car ran good so i didn't complain!

i hope my 00' doesn't so this. i tried the new PCV#12572717 and notice nothing, you might use it if you have oil in your throttle both, though.

I don't use oil yet, however, I do have a 160 therm.

I lowered the thermostat and the occassional pinging stopped. I knew that this would rob a little power but, for me, it was a good trade-off.

I did not realize, however, that it could also increase oil consumption - interesting!

I assume that once oil consumtion starts, I cannot reverse it by running a hotter therm. Is this correct?b

I guess I have gotten lucky. My car has not burned any noticable amount in the 2.5 years I have had it racing or not
