Default TR224 over Hotcam

i was pretty set on going with the hotcam before i did alot of research on cams. now i know a little more. i want to keep the car driveable and use the stock heads on the car. the only reason i still am sold on the hotcam is because its cheap only having to use the kit really. can you guys sell me on the TR224 and tell me what i have to get in addition to the cam for the valvetrain for this setup to work. trying not to spend an arm and a leg but i dont want to cut corners. and im looking for right around the 400rwhp mark with full boltons

i have the tr224 114. that cam is sweet. you need new springs comp 918's probably. you should get hardened pushrods with either cam. i went with the tr224 because of the fact that it has been proven to get the 400hp mark.

It all about trade off's and what your willing to give up and pick up... You can use 918 springs or spring kit- I would use the 921, Patriot's or VHP(Crane) spring kits. You should get to 400rwhp with the 224, plus full bolts on.. But can you live with some drivability issue if not tunes right.
You can also look at other cam's bewteen the hot and tr224.

In my opinion, you can't even compare the hotcam w/ the TR224. Because the hotcam doesn't even begin to compare to it.

well lets just keep that opinion to your self then lol! j/k! i dont think that statement is very fair at all! most people that do a hotcam dont even have all the bolt ons to support it, but most 224 onwers do have them all, and if not all of them then most of'em. but i know there are plenty of hotcam cars around 380-390 which is just about where the 224 is.
i also know a couple of people that are running mid 11's with the hotcam and bolt ons!

I would get the TR224. I had mine for about 30k and loved every minute of it. The only reason I changed is I'm trying to step mine to a different level now. The HP and TQ numbers in my sig are with the TR224 on a 112 LSA and the bolt ons that are listed.

with the 6 speed drivability should be similar to stock. with any cam tuning will help though. it is hard to stop with one mod like that without doing everything else. i usually buy things and then more and more then put them all on at once, as you can see in my sig.

I'd go for a TSP MS3, that will get you over 400

If not, TR-224 all the way

TR 224, 918 springs, Pushrods. Got everything in a kit from thunder racing, gaskets, pulley bolt and all. I also put my headers and ORY pipe on at the same time.

i highlighted the portion of importants. look at the vavle lifts and durations on both cams.

.050 is the duration your given on cam cards and specs that are thrown around. when looking at the 228 @ .050 vs the 224 @ .050 of the tr224 lobe one would believe the 228 hot cam lobe to be bigger but once you get past .050 you can see its not.

if that doesnt sell you on it i dont know what will . only thing different from what you needed for the HC are 918's. the rest of the list in your HC thread applies.

Hot Cam was a great cam for the LT1, but with an LS1 you can do better. TR224 will run smoother AND have more power because it has more agressive ramps. Take advantage new technology rather than recycle old technology into your new engine. I would use Comp 918 springs and oversize, hardened pushrods with the TR224 as "required support parts." There are many other "nice to have" items, though.

I was wondering about this cam also? Does it make more power and torque than stock at every rpm?

from what iv heard driveability on the hotcam sucks very poor idle and it doesnt make the power the tr224 will.the hotcam in my 94 z has terrible idle and driveability
i wouldnt recomend either the lt1 or ls1 hotcam. i think you would be very happy with the tr224 or the mti stealth 2
