Default Bad lifter????

after going from the stock cam to a TSP 233/239 603/600 112 cam, prc dual springs, double roller timing chain, and hardened stock length pushrods, i have a noise.

The noise isnt constant. 95% of the time its perfectly normal. But, everyonce in a while it will start to make a loud clicking noise that sounds alot like a bend pushrod. it will follow the rythem of the valve train the same as a bend puch rod as well. it onnly does it when the engine is up to temp. But then, like it wsa never there, it disapears..:dunno: it cant be a bent pushrod or valve, because it comes and goes.

i have it from a pretty good sourse that its probably a lifter. He says that the seat presure is very high on the new springs and cause isues with the old lifter s (almost 80K miles on them) maybe not oiling up correctly or getting air.

Based on what TSP told me, i just finished re-torqing the rockers to make sure it wasnt that, but its hard to tell if it was or not due to the fact that its so speratic.

What is your thoughts on this...is the DR chain a posible culprit?

I have the exact same problem. I have always had a slight tick comming from the engine, but when I put in a thunder racing custom cam, and comp cams 921 dual valve springs I had a pretty bad tick on #5, the same place where the slight tick was. It only does it when it's warm and if the oil pressure ever drops below normal it makes a lot of noise. My car has 92k on the clock and I'm putting in some new lifters and I'm pretty sure it will cure the problem, but I'll let ya know!

You might have a turned lifter like I did. I doubt your springs beat up the lifters; those lifters are pretty stout. Make sure you have 60 psi of oil presure; when you don't have enough oil presure, the lifters are the first thing to act up.

with the stock oil pump and the ported LS6, my car only makes 38-40 psi of oil pressure

Auto car? 40 lbs idling at normal operating temp is normal.

I switched to Comp stock replacement lifters because I don't have adjustable rockers.

pphilli1, did you figure out why your lifter turned? I had a defective lifter guide, but I still wonder if that's what really casued it.

Does anyone know anything about the Crane lifters? Their web site claims they are better suited for after market cams than OEM lifters.

i think my problem may have been a loose rocker... i took the valve covers off and re-torqued all of them, none of them where at 22 lbs, but there wanst one that stood out as being looser than th rest..id say most of them had worked their way down to around 15-18 lbs.. thats just a guess, but i did re torque all of them, and havent had the noise yet....but being that the noise is so unpredictable, who know, we will have to wait and see.. either way, im pulling the heads in two weeks and relpacing them and the lifters.

You could always put a little locktite on there, they'll hold the torque...thats what I plan to do this weekend when I do the cam swap...

had that ticking sound that came and went.. took off the heads and the lifters all looked fine. Pulled the cam and the front cam bearing was wore down some. I did find a metallic dust in my oil.. drain the oil into something you can look in and see if its got metal in it.

dunno if the cam bearing was casuing my ticking, but i pulled my whole bottom end out.. better safe than sorry at 6500rpms lol

goodluck man

i just rolled mine over 100k this weekend. i think i have a lifter taking a crap as well, it doesnt do it all the time, and it really starts to speak its mind after a few good rhomps. if i sit in line for fastfood too long or somthing, it dips down to around 30psi and really starts to talk to me. its been getting progressivly worse and worse this weekend and at the end of last week. i think i'm going to order my new valvetrain today or tomorrow.
