Yeah, big cams don't get good gas mileage. Having all that overlap certainly doesn't help. Another reason people with big cams get bad gas mileage is the supporting mods. M6 guys wil often have steeper gears while A4's will obviously have a high stalll converter. Plus just making more power burns more gas. The way you make more power is by getting more air in, so that you can add more fuel.

That being said, big cams don't necessarily get BAD mileage. There are people with heads/cam making 400 rwhp and getting 30 mpg on the interstate. (i believe) Just not me!

If you don't floor it I bet the gas mileage is not that bad

I think the bigger the cam the more a bigger gear will actually help you out, I'm actually starting to think my 244 248 cam in my stroker may be a bit too small by today's standards.

You will have stock length pushrods unless you have different heads that have been milled. the power band you described is pretty accurate with a bigger cam. Mine really comes alive from 4000 to where the power peaks at 6500.

I have a big cam with a 3500 stall converter, and 3.23's. Most of my driving is to and from campus, which is barely long enough to get the car warmed up. It involves lots of stop and go with lights/traffic and the occasional romp from 40~100 over the open stretch on the way back.. I have been getting ~10 mpg.

How to afford paying for all the stuff i put on my car, is get paid to put the same stuff on other peoples cars. Charge good prices on things, and just let them know that they suply parts, that way no money out of your pocket.

I'm 21 also and turn my own wrench too on all my mods. I'm really lucky to have a father who has been building SBC's, BBC's @ 392 Hemi's all his life, so I have picked up quite a few tricks and help tips along the way. I also get access to his huge garage full of kickass tools. I've got 29.1MPG on a long freeway trip before with my current setup in sig.

Having the the right tools is half the battle plus it saves you a LOT of time as far as the install goes. As far as gas mileage I haven't figured mine with the new cam but just a little FYI, I used to have a '94 Z28 with a hotcam (218/228 .525"/.525") w/ LT's, ORY, etc. and I hit 30 mpg on a highway trip.

I got 23 mph on both the stock cam and a TR224. With the larger cam I have now, I've been getting 19 mph, but I can still improve on the tune. The biggest problem with a cam, is your foot gets heavier after you install it!
