Default Another Cam Selection thread with a twist

Hey guys, As some of you know i have to replace a broken lifter on my 98 z28 m6, only i'm gonna swap the cam out while i'm in there aswell. i'm a bit new to the whole cam thing but i talked to a few different companies about what i'm looking for. Heres what i need/restrictions:
a.)I want a pretty aggressive cam that lopes pretty good but i dont want to fight to keep it running or keep it from bucking in gear.
b.)I'm expecting a cam with 40-45rwhp Gain
c.)I'm using the STOCK heads/rods/rockers.
d.)And for the tricky one. CONNECTICUT EMISSIONS... i need to pass emissions.

Basically from what i understand, passing emissions is mostly in the tuning but an overly aggressive cam can bring you to a point of no return.
The cam's i have been suggested are as follow:
A.) FMS F2 - 588/224/114
FMS F4 - 575/226/114

B.) Thunder Racing - 230/236/112

C.) SLP ( Didnt suggest getting a cam)

Edit: See Sig for mods, AND note that i am also ordering mac midlength's and y-pipe

I want to order a cam this week and any help /advice you guys can give me would be very much appreciated.

Oh and for those who have replaced a lifter, can you replace only one ? or do you HAVE to replace them all ?

I would highly reccomend upgrading the springs. Stock are barely good enough for a stock cam.

depends on what lift and lobes your cam has...... if you are going to be under .550 lift id say stick with comps bee hives, if you are going .560 and up id say get a good dual spring like comps 921kit... also get a good 1 peice pushrod and Ti retainers....

as far as cam , im not sure how smog is over there but ive heard that its the same as CALI.... so id say get somthing like a 224 .560 114 to be safe....
or a 228 .581 112 if you want to push more HP and risk failing, or just swap out every year and get a 231 sized cam..... its up to you, but with a good 224 cam kit you'll be around 340rwhp.... add long tubes, LS6, pulleys, and a tune and you could see 370rwhp.... add heads and youll hit 400!

good luck

all what you ask can be done but the last one. If you want to pass smog you cant lope hard and make big power!

I would go with the FMS F4. The 226/226 will make great power and could see ~400 rwhp on stock heads with the supporting intake and exhaust mods. This cam idles better than the TR224 and will make ~10 rwhp more. The TR224 can pass emissions and the F4 should too with good tuning. You will need valvesprings and I am using the Manley NexTek Springs and Ti Retainers from Scoggin Dickey. I bought these for $178 and nothing elese will come close to these.

I dont see the TR 230/236 on a 112* passing emissions with the best tuner working his magic.
You might want to rethink the lope issue. You can get a nice powerful cam with little lope and pass emissions, which I am sure the emissions is 1st, power is 2nd and lope is last on priority list!

comp 918's are good WELL past .560 lift...quite a few guys on here run them on cams straight to .600 lift and beyond. the beehive blue stripe 918's used to be advertised to .625 before the 921's came out

big cams + emissions = no worky. good luck!!! 224's can pass emissions with a decent tune and still make good amounts of usable power all day long w/o puttin a hurt on your valvepsprings(918's work perfectly w/this cam, use Ti retainers and hardened PushRods). anything past that is a crapshoot even with the best tuner.

Have you tried calling Allan at Futral MS? He won't lead you wrong. That is where I get almost all my stuff from. If they carry it I get it from them. Their customer service is the best.

see my thread...if your not buying like right away, I will be getting my 226/226 112 tuned next week, likely Monday....

https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamometer-results-comparisons/289759-226-226-guys-here.html

I posted my full opinion there, and will dyno it after the tune...not immediately, but not too long from now, either..probably in 1 1/2-2 weeks...maybe sooner, it depends now bad I want to dyno it, and where...
If a dyno day pops up Im on it for sure no matter when it is...

Either way, I think you will find my review interesting...check it out
I will say so far there are no regrets whatsoever, except that I dont know why I didnt do it sooner...
We will see if that changes when its tuned & dyno'd...

I dont know about emissions...someone suggested this one should pass...it's not an issue for me, so you'll have to talk to these guys about that.
Feel free to ask questions...

-Chris

Have you dyno'd that 228 yet? I almost went with that one, but got a huge deal on this one, so I figured..what the hay?
