Default small block and long block

this may be a really dumb qustion but what determines wether or not an engine block is a lb or a sb. what is the differences. thanks

You are confusing two different comparisons.

Long Block vs. Short Block = (see JRP's post)

Small Block vs. Big Block = This refers to the physical size of the block, back when Chevrolet (for example) had two different sized engine blocks. SBC can be 262-400 in OEM size and BBC can be 396-454 in OEM size (502 came later, but not in production vehicles).
