You are confusing two different comparisons.
Long Block vs. Short Block = (see JRP's post)
Small Block vs. Big Block = This refers to the physical size of the block, back when Chevrolet (for example) had two different sized engine blocks. SBC can be 262-400 in OEM size and BBC can be 396-454 in OEM size (502 came later, but not in production vehicles).
