i would not TOUCH the 10 bolt with a 20 foot pole unless...
a) it broke, i needed transportation, and diddnt have enough for a 12 bolt/9"
or
b) i actually enjoyed spending money on trying to polish a turd
i broke my 10 bolt w/ 3.08 gears (dont ask, not my fault, installed before i bought it), running 245/50/r16 street tires (cheap ones at that), headers only, and NEVER stepping foot onto a track. broke 8 of the 13 teeth off the pinion.
get the cam, leave the gears, buy a ta cover (so at least you can sell the 10 bolt after you upgrade) for a little support (no pun intended

maby this way your clutch will last long enough so you can replace it at the same time as your 10 bolt!

the stock 10 bolt is not nearly as weak as many make it out to be. I have over 200 track launches on mine with 600 ft lbs of tq.. ya, i have broken the differntial twice, but the stock 3.42's still look good as new.
btw, it would be much better to break the gears, they are cheaper than the differntial! don't worry so much about breaking, use your head and don't do anything to crazy, but most of all, have fun!
