Default Pen Magnets for cam swap

OK - I tried looking for relatively inexpensive ones, but no luck

I saw some on e-bay but I'm not sure if they will clear the pushrod hole of less than 1/2". I saw some in autozone, but those were $3 each....

I know some of you will suggest a home-made rod that can be inserted (JPR tool, i think), but even with those I heard that the lifter can fall through...

Does anyone know where can I buy those pen magnets ?
I heard Wal-Mart, but I looked and couldn't find it....

Any comments (links) would be greatly appreciated.

I got mine at a local auto parts store that had containers full of cheap stuff at the checkout register, like key chains, and other junk. Also mixed in there were cheap pen magnets for about 2 bucks a piece. Just check out all your auto parts stores. Something will turn up. Good luck!

Unless your making the rod out of balsa wood it cant fall through. I dont have the specs but the dowels work fine. I have the jpr rods and if I had known what they were I would have gone with a homeade version. If I had a vernier caliper I'd shoot you the specs. The magnets work, cracks me up people do it that way, but they do work.
I'd like $32 worth of pen magnets please. You can have rods made for that much at a local shop theres nothing to them.

Whoever told you about the lifters falling through the rod is, pardon me, AN IDIOT.

Get the idiot to explain to us all how the lifters can move through the wood. . . . .

I got two dowel rods for .49 a piece. How much are 16 pen magnets?

If you buy the fancy individual ones that are packaged and shrink-wrapped they cost 6 or 7 bucks a pop.

5/16 and 1/4 wooden dowels worked fine for me. About $.50 each

The JPR rods are about 80 bucks, 16 pen magnets about 32 bucks. Plus you can reuse them if you ever decide to change cams again. And pen magnets come in handy around the garage for other uses.

What happens if you snap the end off a wooden dowel, you're f******. I'd use a homemade metal or aluminum rods before a wooden dowel.

I used aluminum rods for mine. Didn't want to take a chance with the wooden dowels.

pen magnets are a joke! 1 .69 cent 4 ft hardwood dowel is all it takes in 5/16 dia.cut it in half 24" each and ur ready to pull out the cam.

Yea, that was my original plan. I already have two 5/16" dimeter aluminum rods....Someone mentioned smaller, 1/4 " rod. Would that one go into the passanger side ?

I spent like $4 a piece for my pen magnets. They...uh...were defective or something...so I took them back. After cleaning them of course.

I use the pen magnets that hold up to 6 to 10 pounds. They are like 5 a piece. But they stick to the lifters like a ****.

I had a pen magnet come apart on me. 5/16 brake line ovaled works great though.

I used a 5/16 rod from home depot on the drivers side and a 5/16 wood dowel on the other side. I had two 5/16 rods but was too lazy to grind one down. They worked great.
It is nice to have one pen magnet for the value keepers.

I bought one good pen magnet and the damn thing stuck and broke off in the head. I'd agree and just do the wood/metal rod thing instead. I'll never double check with a pen magnet ever again cause I had to pull the head to get it out.

Very good point. Pen magnet is your best friend with the keepers.
