rtv on bottom of front cover?

rtv on bottom of front cover?

ive seen several comments in my searches to put rtv on the flat spot(bottom) of the front cover when putting the oil pan back on.
how many have actually done this? is it a horror story if i dont do it? the gaskets for theses motors dont look like they should require rtv, or i didnt think so.

I always put a bead of RTV on the bottom of the timing chain cover to oil pan everytime it comes off.

I always use red RTV on the front and rear covers where they meet the pan. Better safe than sorry. I believe the LS1 rebuild manual says to use sealant (GM# 12378190 or equivalent) at the intersections where the block/cover/pan all meet together .

Never heard any horror stories. Always use a bead of RTV when I remove it.

As said above you should do it. The manual states to use a double bead. Make an elongated ovalfrom the corner to the inside lip of where the front cover will meet.
