Default Noobish question about "tunes"

I see alot of people saying their car is "tuned".. well technicailly what is that?

Is it like messing with the computer IE: "forcing more fuel" "changing the
Shift points" stuff like that??? can't you just buy that PowerProgramer thingy??

would tune make a difference on a stock car? If so where abouts in Maryland is a good place to get one.. and how much do they tend to cost?

any kind of info would be great

You pretty much nailed it.

My buddy grabbed 3 MPH and dropped a couple of tenths in the 1/4 mile by
tuning his stock motor.

No, you can't just buy the power programmer thing. A tune would help just about any car, but the more mods you have the more drastic the change. A "tune" typically means having an experienced person alter PCM settings with a program such as LS1 edit with the car on a dyno. They alter all kinds of things that are over my head, getting the correct air-fuel ratio and spark advance, as well as drivability. (important with larger cams)

Something like the Predator or the Crane Programmer are good starting points as far as handheld units (forget HPP3), but as you mod your car, the more your tune will have to go outside the parameters of the handhelds.

Unless you get a custom tune for the handheld, like I've done with my Predator... the bad thing about it is that you have to wait on someone else to tune the car based on your own observations... which can be frustrating if you have to keep getting things tweaked.

At my point, HP Tuners is definitely a better idea... as soon as I get a laptop, that's what I'll be doing.

The best handheld for the money is the the Crane or Vinci Tool. $429 and you can adjust with more detail compared to the Predator plus I have a cam that is very similar to the profile options they have set. Next week Friday Vinci will be getting a call for my order.

Yeah, but I don't own a laptop, so the handheld gets the nod.

That sounds like a winner, but I've been thirsty for this this and it's only one week away.

I went from 326rwhp/338rwtq stock to 344rwhp/353rwtq from just a tune with LS1 edit... nothing else changed.

Thats 18rwhp/15rwtq in just tuning.

I've made a stock car pick up 1.3 seconds with a torque converter and tune, in the quarter mile. Obviously results will vary... but I'm giving a example with a completly stock car.

People talk about 'tunes' all the time, but a real tune is customized to your car, your settings, your sensors, everything. Definitely not just copy and paste on graphs because "it worked before". Cough cough cough.
