redline?
what sets a cars redline? the computer sets the rev limiter right? but what about when a cam makes power up to 6800? with hardened pushrods and better valve springs can it rev higher than stock redline without messin sh*t up and breaking something?
The "redline" is the term used for the maximum safe engine speed for your motor. This should coincide with your rev limiter setting.
Your engine's redline will rise as you put higher quality, made-for-racing components in it. These parts are made for higher engine speeds so they shouldn't break.
In the old days, you were the rev limiter. Now the PCM handles that chore.

I have changed out my cam, springs and rods too. Since then, I have raised my rev limiter to 6800RPM (HPTuners). I dynoed last week and ran all the way to 7000 and still making power. I would say it is safe to run that high at times but keep up with the maintenance to avoid regrets later.
with my comp cam (2200-6800 power band), 918 springs, and hardened 7.400" pushrods...what should i shift at for racing? 6500-6700? somewhere along those lines? or would i be safe to run the full 6800? i'm gonna get dynoed sometime over the summer...i'll find out more then, i'm just curious now...lol

i made a spreadsheet that will explain to you how much you can gain/lose by playing with shiftpoints and gearing. lemme know what you think. soon i'll post a new version that will show you graphs of it all

I just dropped in a cam and I still shift most of the time at the stock 6,000 rpm even though the engine is still pulling strong. If I have a race then I can stretch it to the limiter that I set with the Crane cam tuner. No need to rag your car out if your not "needing" to.
