Dowel pins
I was putting on head for my LS1 and after I finished torqueing(sp?) it down I looked at the other head and noticed I had two dowel pins still in the head and one in the other side of the block.
I put the heads on the wrong side and now one side only has one dowel pin.
How necessary are these pins, are they just for alignment or what?
I hope I don't have to pull the head back off. Damn new bolts and gasket again.

The dowel pins do locate the head on top of the block (in relation to the bore centers) and my guess is that between the one block dowel and the bolts it couldn't be off by too much, but I would remove and reinstall just to sleep better. The gasket will be fine but if you used new stock bolts you will have to spring for those again due to the torque to yeild situation.
Good luck...
