This is not like a piston slap tick or valve train noise... Trust me I could live with that. This is a flat out engine knock.

Now they say they dont think it is a rod pin since it is now ticking during idle after it warms up.

This is getting crazy

with this engines is easier to determine bearing noise,
put a sthetoscope (spelling?) to the side bolts of the main bearing caps

aside it was nice of the shop to "open" the possibility that they acceptet that they fucked off the service, and before is too late ask a reimbursement (spelling again?) or gave the work done again and they have to pay for new pistons.
be very polite and thankfull for diagnosing the problem to a failure of the service you asked.
with a lot of patience it can be done, if they not bulge
pronounce the America`s favorite three words.

What brand and kind of bearing did you use
remember that maybe the shop was thinking "old" (gen I, II) clearances and thats where they fked the service.
our engines are very tight by car standards....
