? on makers of 160* thermostats
I am fixing to order my 160* thermostat. I am down to Hypertech and SLP.
I have read a few people having problems with the Hypertech not working right out of the box. I know any company has problems with their products sometime.
Opinions are welcome.
So my question is:
Would you buy the Hypertech 160* thermostat for $45.99 or the SLP for $50.70?

Some people are confused that they will read 160* temps after putting a 160* thermostat.
It only means that the thermostat will let coolant into the motor once it reaches the 160* mark. Temp readings might be slightly less. LS1's operate at max efficiency over 200* anyways. Cooler is not better.

well, when its on average of 115 out here in yuma, az. thats ambient air temp too. not the actual temp on the road or ground here. so, having a 160* stat is quite useful in hot temps. now, if its a colder enviroment then yea, stock would be better. I see that you location says your in Dubai, i've been there. I know it aint cold and quite hot. So, you would probally benifit from a cooler stat.

Usually you have to adjust your fan activation temps also.
And use a real temp guage, that stocker is fucked

All the hypertech 160 t-stats I've seen have Moto Rad cast into the housing. They probably make all of them. http://www.motoradusa.com/products/t...ement/pic.html

If you want to spend $0 and have a 160 thermo, you can pull it apart and shim it yourself. I did this probably 3 years ago. Once you pull it apart you will see an opening where part of the thermostat travels while opening/closing. You can drop a BB in there and essentially make it open at around 160. (I actually lopped off the end of a machine screw with a dremel myself)
Anyone else remember this? It was one of the "free" mods floating around about 4 years ago.

Only works on a few select years of 'stats. My '02 t-stat didn't work using this method. (yes there was a t-stat change in design in '00? '01? I forget offhand....) I experimented with 4 t-stats, 3 of design "a", and 1 of design "b". Only the earlier years' t-stats could be modded like this.

Yeh, I did the free mod shimming the stock thermostat abuot 4 years ago and it worked fine.
Later, when I swaped the heads and cam I bought a new stock unit...
A cooler thermostate does not mean more power; if that were the case no thermostate would be best...
