thanks brent. due to financial issues i need to put some rod bearings in it and see what happens. if it begins to knock again ill just build a different motor. There is no sense in resizing a stock rod anyway IMO. the ends done justify the means in this situation. If it'll last me a year, great i can save up until them for it or build one over winter but right now i just want to drive it. if it knocks again in 2 weeks.. well, you cant say you didn't tell me so. I still think it'll knock after the rod bearing replacement since the bearing clearances were within specs anyway.

I understand being on a tight budget. I would suggest emailing valvegod@ aol.com and ask him for a couple of good used rods. And replace the rods with the bearing problems. Look at the crank hard also especially where the champher is on the side.
If you put another bearing in those rods, it is going to come apart. It has already been overheated. If it comes apart you take the chance on losing a head with the rest of the short block.
I think you can get a rod form Valvegod for about 50-80 bucks just reuse the existing pistons/rings (keeping them in the same cylinder)if you have to. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I am really tring to save you money.

oh and btw, the rod bearings that are worn are not in order from the back. i'll get more info when im completely done, but its not the last 3 in order. In fact, one of two on the same crank journal looks perfect and one is torn up.

Praise the Lord! Nice job Dave. I've been watching in anticipation. Sorry you had to tear into the motor. Hopefully, you'll have plenty of troublefree miles after this.

Sorry to resurrect an old thred, but I'm guessing the car is still together? Did you just throw in some stock sized replacement bearings? My car is ticking and I noticed some bearing wear when I threw in some arp rod bolts, but not that bad!

Bringing the tread back from the dead... had an almost exact noise in my car (see previos posts) finally dissasembled the motor, all bearings were ok, but #5 and #7 top compression rings had failed. The chrome insert (hellfire rings) had come out of part of the ring. My noise was piston slap in 2 cylinders not too much damage - quick hone and the bores were back to spec (only .0005" taper) Pistons have slight scuff but still have the right clearance so I will re-use.
Motor will be back together in a week or so - will let you know if it solved the problem.

I threw new rod bearings in and checked all the wrist pins and pistons while I was in there hoping I would find the problem and I still haven't found it. It's somewhere between the camshaft and valve. Oh well. It still putts 400 to the wheels.
