I did the same thing the first time my eng came out. It was pretty easy . The second cam swap we dropped it on a lift and that was easier. I dont trust messing with keepers over the head while in the car.

good thread!!!! I did one from the top. It wasnt that hard at all. Just a little time consuming, but when everyone is always supervising or on break, you limited on how much work gets done

My car was solid the whole time it was in the air on jacks. We have done this four or five times without one incident or close call. If it was rickety I would not get under the car. I don't know if you guys realize how light the car is when you remove everything on the kmember. Not much weight to support on the stands, and my back wheels were blocked. I agree a lift would be much easier, but I don't have access to one and I am sure most people don't either. This is a way to swap motors with minimal tools and work.

yo guys you guys really are nuts
sure if i had i lift i might consider doing it from the bottem so i can get the tranny and engine out at once but for a home mecanic its much safer and much easier to pull the trans and pull the motor through top and i have pulled mine through the top and it was easier then i ever thought it would be...in and out

and i have seen people pull the motor and trans through the top but i wont be tring it

how are you getting the car that high in the air in the first place? I know my jack won't lift that high? Am I missing something? I would much rather screw w/ the keepers w/ the engine out! lol

Well, by reading this thread I just found out how to get to the #7 and #8 plugs. I couldn't figure out how to do it.

I used a lift though, wasn't too bad, took 3 1/2 hours first time. I'd say I could do it in 3 now. Had 2 people doing it BTW.

Man you guys got some ballz. Hat's off to you but I don't have it in me to try nothing like that. Do you have to get a alignment afterwards?

It looks like it would be much more practical/easier lifting the engine out from the top unless you had a lift. There is no way I would be lifting my car that high on jacks and jackstands

All that is used to jack the car up that high is a typical 3-ton jack w/a 36" lift height.

My car sat like the ones in the first set of pics for 6 months with no problems.
I had blocks under the rear wheels, and 1 pair of 6 ton stands and 1 pair of 3 ton stands holding it up.

I would never get under a car if it felt or even looked the least bit unsafe.

Gravity pulls straight down, not down and forward. With the back wheels blocked and the e-brake pulled the car doesn't have any tendency to move in any direction in that plane of axis. Thus, the great majority of force is straight down on the jackstands.

The jackstands stay in place b/c a 3000 lb car is resting on the. Also, the jackstands in use have a very large plateau on them. The angle is not as steep as one may think until you see it in person. I'll have Matt get some pictures of the stand's plateau on the car currently.

Awesome pics and info, good to know in case we decide to do it differently the second time around! We just did a heads/cam swap in my friends garage but the engine stayed in the car! About 35 hours of wrench time later, we were done!

You guys are some diehard SOB's....pulling the motor in a parking garage or driveway. Props to you!

JRP....put the buffer down and step away. That's why I will never own another black car.

Black is the sexiest color on an automobile when it is clean. But like he said, props for the ***** to do that to your neighbors.

One pic had the rear jacked up. Why??? To get under the car I assume but damn, that thing pretty high up.
