Default stock cam shift point?

i havea 99 ss with some bolt on mods--no headers yet--and right now im shifting at 5800. i would like to move it up to 6000 just for the extra couple mph. (im tripping the shift light well b4 the quarter mile with the 4.10's) my buddys 01 with all the bolt ons is shifting at 6200 and his light comes on right b4 the quater--enough he can hold it thru. but i dont think my car will be able to go that high. anyone getting valve float at either rpm range? thats for the help guys.

btw--what should my rev limiter be set at so just in case i dont kill the motor?

best way to find out is to get on a dyno and see where your power peaks and shift 200-300 rpms above that.......course that's all dependent on how fast you shift

i shift pretty fast but i do not and never will powershift. id rather not spend the money on a dyno until im done with my mods. i.e. headers. isnt there a ruff # that a bolt on ls1 makes power at? i know ebery combo is different but i cant imagine identical heads and camshaft differ too much.

Maybe this will be a little more clear. Stock internals, my car was shifting at 6200, rev limiter at 6600 That's with a big stall A4 car.

i dont know what the stock limiter is--i made the mistake of setting it at 6500 with the hypertech b4 i checked. and id prefer notto float the valves if possible 1quickta but thanx for the opinion.

wilwaxu were u still on the stock cam and springs?? some guys say stock internals and they mean rotating assembly. others mean everything. one more clarification and we should be all set. haha.

I was only joking about the valve float thing.. Thats just a lil redneck talk for ya..

A stock LS1 normally does not make power past 6000-6200 rpms.. The stock limiter should be at 6250 if I remember correctly. I'd shift it between 5800-6000 rpms like you are doing now..

when mine was stock i used to shift it right before the rev limiter in every gear

i checked it with a data logger i was shiftin at 6100 almost everytime and i was pullin low 12s with out headers or a pulley just:
lid, catback, nitto

so shift as high as you can
the car likes it

For the 2000 camaros the fule cut out is at 6200 and they power out at 5500 stock. I noticed that you generaly drop about 1000 to 800 rpms per gear. Hmm but that obviously will change as you modify your car. Im told that the ls1 can rev up tp 8000 but I wouldnt test it past 6500 personaly

How many miles are on the engine? If its got alot of miles on it (100k or more) I'd be willing to bet that the valve springs are getting weak and the valves would probly float at 6000+ rpms..

no its only got 9500 miles on it. my budys 01 had 65k b4 he wrecked it shifting at 6200. ive heard that with ls6 springs they can shift at 6400 and still make decent power but with the stock springs its not worth going over 6-6100?

The HP on my stock 98 cam(same as your's) peaked at 5500rpms, and I always shift between 5500-5800. If my car hits 6k, it's an accident hahahaha.

I was messing with the GTO at the track shifting at 6200. I was running crap *** 14's all day. Last pass i shifted at 6100 and i dropped from 14.1's/.2's to 13.8. i'd say you are doing find right now shifting between 5800 and 6000. If you aren't sure then just pay for some dyno pulls, they aren't that expensive.

have a friend with a stock 01ss motor (forged pistons) that is in an 02 s10. with ls1 valve springs, he shifted at 5600..... fell on its face after that.
now with LS6 springs(yellow) he can romp it all the way to 6400 with no troubles, but gives up shortly after. his ride only weighs 2800#, so take that into consideration, but there is more to offer with a stock cam and better valve springs.

LOL, i rev my stock internal car with macs to 6500 all day long, but it was also tuned all the way too 6500, you would be supprised how much is still left after 6000.

Cam cars always ask what my trick is
