Default Practice makes Perfect

One of the more risky parts of a cam change (IMO) is the actual removal and re-installation since you are totally blind to what is lined up and what is not and it is possible to damage the cam bearings. So I decided to practice by making a little wood engine block with the holes for the cam that are a tight enough fit the cam won't go in until it is correctly lined up front to back. Hopefully, I will get real good at it before the fateful day arrives

PS: Cam courtesy of England Green

Thanks EG, I put it to good use

Here is the cam part way in:

Fully installed:

No, my wife thinks I'm nuts, but don't want to damage the bearings.

as long as your are gentle and patient it will slip right in with no bearing problems. Just remember that when you feel it wont go any further, spin it or slightly wiggle it, but DONT force it

Actually, using this goofy contraption has allowed me to visualize what is going on. It has been quite useful and I am getting to the point where I can insert into the bearings without the lobes touching.
