Change mine every 1,500-2,000 miles. Internals on my '99 motor still look like they just rolled off the assembly line ... clean as a whistle.

I only follow OLMs if I use synthetic oil. My '04 Yukon has an OLM and on average, doesn't show its time to change the oil until about 7,000 miles (much sooner with agressive driving). IMHO, 7K is to many miles for regular oil so I use Mobil 1. If using regular oil, it should be every 3K.

I let my car go once to see when the OLM light would come on my SS. It came on between 4000 and 4500 miles.

I had a 1993 Z28 and a 1994 9C1 Caprice (LT1), both were beaters, and almost all highway miles, but never changed less than 6000 miles and most of the time used the cheepie WalMart Tech1 oil. Both cars exceeded 200k miles (bought them both with around 90k) with no leaks/smoke, never an oil-related problem. Also had a different nicer 1993 Z28 before that, same deal, but sold it around 75k, but it never had an oil-related problem. Didn't change the filter every change either with any of these cars.

The owner's manual for one of them (maybe all) said that 6000miles is the oil change schedule if it's highway miles.

Maybe the LS1 is different. Your mileage may vary. I think 3000 if normal driving and 6000 if a lot of highway is just fine, especially if you are using synthetic or blend.

why on gods green earth would you change you oil at 1500-2000 miles. Especially if it is synthetic. most oil is good for a very long time. synthetic oil is good for at least 7000 miles. i never change my oil at 3000. if you are worried about your engine changing colors inside, that is usually from over heating. and if you are still worried about it just use a 1/2 quart of atf with every oil change. not bashing or anything i just dont understand.

I actually go longer than my oil life monitor tells me! My oil life monitor hit zero % at 7000 miles on my last interval, and I reset it and drove an additional 1000 miles. I plan on going even longer on this run, to 9 or possibly even 10000 miles. My oil analysis results after 8000 miles proved my oil still had life left in it.

I still don't understand why people change their synthetic every 3k. It's not even close to being used up by this point.

If I wait 'til 7,000+ miles, my oil looks more like pond water in Florida. That's what happened to my Blazer ... 68,000 miles ... new motor/new transmission. I'd rather change my oil every 1,500-2,000 miles and keep it looking like honey.

There's a lot more to how much life oil has left than how it looks.

been changing it every 2000 for years . id rateher be safer now than sludge or breakdown later . bottom line color means nothing but oil does breakdown and will break dow quicker when the OIL temps are higer( racing/city driving/ect)
can you go longer ? yea probbly but i choose not to . i have to much time and money to take the risk and go every 7000 miles or so

if you drive short trips all the time, and never reach operating temp (which the oil life monitor takes into account), then you should change your oil pretty regularly. otherwise, you are really just throwing good oil away. Just ran some mobil1 for around 8k miles

Yep, I do a lot of that kind of driving in winter and my OLM came on at UNDER 3,000 miles. I drove it a while longer and analysis showed it a little high in fuel (though still within spec) because of all the driving in a rich condition. Bottom line: the OLM is an extremely sophisticated program that you can trust as a baseline for running your oil.

Well the way i lok at is is this. Lets say you go 9k in a year on a oil change with syn oil, and that i go 3k btu change it 3 times. I figure it costs 40$ for a full synthetic oil and the filter. So i waste only 80 dollars a year changin oil over you. Is there any reason to have ALOT more peace of mind over 80 dollars?
Does anyone think the crazy **** mobil says about thier new oil is true? 15k miles on a oil change is absoutly INSANE. GL

I buy my Mobile1 oil at WalMart and a K&N filter at a local parts store ... oil change is $9.00 ... total of $45.00 ... for a motor that costs so much money, why would I not change the oil more frequently? I pulled the valve coveres and it looks like a brand new engine inside. My car's holds oil pressure stays at 70%-80% under very little load. I only had problems from one vehicle in my life and I'm 47 y.o.. I attribute that engine replacement to not changing the oil frequently. Better safe than sorry ... AGAIN.

For some people that do not drive that much, the $ argument is true...but I drive 30,000mi + a year. At 3k intervals, that is 10 oil changes, at a price of $400. If I use 8k intervals, that is at most 4 changes, or $160.

I've settled on somewhere in between too early and too late (for most). I use Mobil 1 and a K&N filter and change every 5000 miles. It's easy to remember and don't have any problems from it yet.

One could easily go 6000 miles, or change the filter only at 3000 and go 6000. That would be a reasonable thing to do. Synthetic oil is good stuff; it dropped the oil temp in the Harley by 20 degrees right off the bat.
