Default My Ls1 Eats 5w30 like she burns gas

I changed the oil a month ago and last night the low oil light came on. I check the oil and sure enough 1.5qt low may be 2. I put a half of a qt in her two weeks ago because the vacume off the intake was pulling oil in next to the TB and then it would settle in the bellow. Durring a WOT run she would burn some of the oil, and smoke like crazy, so i pluged the fitting on the TB and left the line off the valve cover open to breath. I checked it last night and oil was NOT coming out of the breather line that i left open. The car doesn't have any oil leaks, so my only guess is that the rings are shot and i need to do a leak down test on each cylinder or the valve stem seals are bad and i might need to replace those. I keep getting a SES code on the highway cylinder 5 misfire, i just put new plugs in when i did the oil change a month ago. I'm guessing the oil is getting down and foiling it out, i put a new plug in and get the light still, but only around 60-70mph, 80-85mph no problem(she must like it fast)

Anyway, i'm gona check the rings with a leak down tester and if those are good then i'll replace the valve stem seals.

Anything else i might look into?? I am open to all (most) suggestions

Thanks Brady

Dunno but everyone has that problem. Just the LS1, it eats oil like crazy. I even did the LS6 PCV conversion when I did my head swap and it still eats oil. Funny because the light just came on 2 days ago so i added a half quart.

Not everyone with an LS1 has this problem. On my last oil change I went 8000 miles and my dipstick level did not go down!

Mine dont either I use 10w40 and a little lucas synthetic, a catch can, and a gas filter. I never use any oil, and before this it was very bad, i even had my light come on just the same, within 300 or less miles of an oil change.

I used to have all off that too. Just too much crap in the engine bay. The one thing about the LS6 conversion, sure cleans up a lot.

I have the ls6 valley cover too, but it was not enough alone, but im blown and there is alot more pressure. But if there is a problem that bad, the catch can or the new vacuum pump is the only real solution. Unless you run a filter on the filler. I personally would not. Its either fix it or live with oil burning and checking the oil constantly. I like how the inlet hat of my blower puts so much vacuum on the lines. It draws hard. If your adding oil all the time it needs to be fixed one way or the other, as its abnormal. Getting used to checking the oil is not the answer. Is a design flaw that needs addressed.

mine was sucking oil like crazy when i did my swap. I got the ls6 valley cover and that basicly fixed it. I only fill my catch can up about 1/8th of it in about 5k miles.

At least get some higher viscosity oil in there for the time being. 5-30 pours like water and will exacerbate your problem. How did your plugs look when you pulled 'em? That may give you an idea of what you'll find with the leak-down.

I used to have another LS1 with nearly 200k miles on it and it never leaked a bit. Never had the engine rebuilt or anything. Just ran and ran and ran until i wrecked it at the race track

So what oil viscosity are you suggesting?

Since knowing true viscosity means more than reading the label on the bottle, I'd recommend doing a search for posts by "Patman" ... read and you'll learn a lot. Recommended synthetics are German Castrol 0-30, Mobil 1 5-40 Truck & SUV, Mobil 1 -40 ... or 10-30 or even 15-40 dino if the problem is real bad.

I was having issues with oil consumption on my car. About every 1800 miles I was about 1 quart to a 1 1/2 quarts low. I also never had a drop of oil on the ground but was missing oil which it really started after the car sat for a year and then was modded. After going to the shop I deal with on everything and discussing the problems. After all of us looking into a few different things on the car and remembering there was another customer having the same issues (his car sat for a year too) ..... we changed the valve seals on the car .... it helped the the other LS1 but I blew my motor before I could really tell the difference or if it helped.

Good luck!

Nothing wrong with 8K oil change..especially if they were highway miles..when you use synthetic oil you can go longer the the 3K on dino oil....I usually don't go that long but I always go at least 5k-6k between changes..I have no oil consumption issues at all..

This is whats just started happening to me, but mine is BAD. It used to burn a quart every 2500 miles or so. till 65k now in the last week I started missing on like 2-3 cylinders. Just finished the drivers side plugs and the from the front to back first lpug was dry and good, second was little darker but borderline ok, third was OMFG caked on with sludge I dont think it could fire at all, 4th was same but not as thick, still firing maybe barely. not finished yet.
Anyway its been drinking anything over 2 qts low when I add some it eats instantly.
Doesnt matter if I add 1/2 a q or 2 q s more I add the worse it smokes but at 2 q s low it quits eatin it and quits smoking. stays at around 210 degrees.
my volt meter is jumpin around, I got short issues.
I dont see how this could be without a hole in the piston but I did nothing to make me think that is possible.
