Default newbie question..

I have what everybody call piston slap on my 01 SS, I tried to go to gm to fix it but they won't do anything.

so my question is, would a new cam kit fix the problem?

also, how much would this cost me (parts + work)?

thanks guys

truthfully i dont think a new cam will fix the piston slap. the piston slap is caused by carbon build up on the pistons as far as i understand.....now maybe if you get a cam with a pretty choppy idle you wouldn't be able to hear the piston slap near as bad. I have seen cam kits go from 700 to well over 1000 dollars......that isn't including installation.....hope i answered your question....good luck

Piston slap is caused by the rings. A cam will not fix the problem. Forged pistions and new rings will fix it .

Piston slap is cause by the piston squirt hitting the cylinder wall before it has time to expand on cold starts.
New pistons with tighter clearances cures the problem.

oh ok thanks guys!

damn, that's even more $$...

So, one more questions, how much would it be for pistons, rings, work and wathever I would need? Some good ones, but I don't want to build a race car neither..

It's not a must that you change the pistons and rings. How loud is it when the car is at full temp? If your going to do the swap I would reomend going with forged pistons and rods. This will also alow you to add big power in the future if you want. Forged rods will run you around $550 a set and pistons are about the same price.

You want to know a nice fact about piston slap?
Stock slapping shortblocks make more power than forged blocks (all else being equal)

So unless you have damaged block, just live with it, most of us just do that.
Or just get a cam that lopes harder than the slap.

i know it doesn't hurt but i wanted to have an idea of how much it would cost to fix it. The slap is pretty loud, even at warm engine..

so, about $1000 for parts, how much is the work?

thanks again

Sounds like he doesn't know what that costs.

Call up a couple of the sponsors that are local to you, they will be able to give you the best idea. The best anyone here could do is give you a ballpark.

I agree. Let it slap. Just add a cam and the valve train noise will be more over powering than the slap noise.

Thats what I did on my 01. Piston slap???? I don't here any slap.

The real question is did the noise just start, or did you just start to notice the noise. Some cars come with a slight tap NEW and eventually goes away with the engine wearing in. But if the engine just started tapping, I would be worried. Better double check the oil pressure and oil level. If you have heard of the old stick trick you can find if the noise is comming from the top of the bottom and tell if it is just a valve tap on top or bottom end tap.

the car has been doing the noise for a while, oil pressure and level are fine.

i think i bought the car like that but it had some thicker oil to cover the noise, possible?
