Spinning crankshaft by hand on Vette

Spinning crankshaft by hand on Vette
Getting ready to install some springs and rockers and trying to figure out how to spin the crank by hand since the steering rack is in the way. I have cut down a socket and hope to be able to figure out how to get a small handle on it. Has anyone else figured out a good trick to do this?

You can spin it via the alternator center nut which is 15/16" also. You have to have the belt installed and hold pressure (tighter) against the tensioner at the same time as turning the alternator.

You will have to remove the belt to strap it around the pulley. You can get those strap wrenches at homedepot or lowes. Only thing you might have issue with is finding room around other accessories to turn it.

Here is what I have done since I went to solid roller and have checked lash often.
I found the starter relay in the front distribution box...and carefully slid one wire into the power connection on the control side (low amp) of the relay and put that on a momentary switch. The other end of the switch went to ground. Now I just "bump" the motor over using the starter. Works like a charm and reduces time greatly. I have mine hard mounted now. Just be sure you never hit the switch while running. The car will not start like this becasue the ignition key is off. You dont even need the key in the ignition.
You can get a switch like this at Radio shack for $5 or less.
However..I have no clue where the distribution box or start relay is on the vette.

I have a remote switch. It is just a big plastic push button with long wires and alligator clips. Clip one to the big positive battery cable on the starter, and the other to the small outboard terminal with the purple wire on the starter. You can tap the switch real quick and bump the motor over in very small steps.

Vettenuts, i just took belt off all accessories, removal of the alternator makes it an easier job of getting to valve cover on d/side. I just removed belt from all accessories and kept it on crank pulley. With spark plugs removed, and pulling on belt with gloved hands, standing on pass. side, there is enough friction around 300* of pulley to pull on belt from the bottom of the pulley to turn the engine over in the correct direction

i was unable to use th alt pulley no matter how much tension i put on it. Someone weldeda bar on acut down socket for me and that worked. However to replace springs and readjust valves, the motor does not ever have to rotate. I've done it numerous times w/o it.
