Default After cam install lifter tapping

I have a TSP 231/231 .598 .595 112 + 4 and new oil pump. I have tapping on the drivers side. I pretty sure it's a lifter. After the first start up it was fine. Then I drove it and it started tapping. My oil pressure is at 40lbs idle. Is there anything I can do to make it stop before I pull the head?

on the oil pump, did you make sure the "o" ring was not damaged? when i did replaced my oil pump, i ripped the "o" ring, and had low pressure and a tap. Replaced the o ring and it was good as new. worth a try

My oil pressure is not like it used to be before the swap. It will go up to about 55lbs when I get on it and before it would at 60lbs. The oil ring was not ripped. I installed the oil ring on the lip of the pump and slid the tube inside the oil pump.

Did you check to make sure it didnt get pinched? how did you reinstall the crank pulley? Did you heat it? Go back & make sure all the rockers are torqued down.

I really don't think I pinched the ring. I reinstalled the crank pulley with a hammer. Yes I checked the rockers. It sounds like just one lifter. Sometimes it will completely stop tapping when the oil pressure goes up and then when the pressure drops to around 35lbs it will start tapping.

If you replaced your springs, it probably is the ticking noise from the aftermarket springs. I know after I put the beehive springs on mine, it makes more valvetrain noise. Like a ticking sound.

That is true in some cases. But I had a TSP231/237 with Patriot Gold Dual springs & never had any valvetrain noises. I switched to a FM13 & I got ticking like crazy, sounded like it was dead center front of the motor on the drivers side. After a month of searching & trying things I finally found what it was. When I heated the crank pulley with propane torch, I slid it on to far. causing it to tick. So I pulled it half way off, then torqued it down to the specs, and there you have it, problem fixed. People swore it was the lifters, others swore it was some what normal. But it wasnt.

Sounds like with your oil pressure issues, that the o-ring is pinched slightly. More than likely if its pinched it will be on the back side, & you cant see back there nor can you feel. Try to find a small mirror to check it out. Thats what I used.

Just went outside and started my car no tapping. I know that if I drive it down the road it will start back. Why does it only do it sometimes?

It doesnt do it when you first start it, because the oil is cold & think. One it gets hot & thin then you start having noises again.

Well, you got me. I did have a buddies car I put a cam it started ticking that night after I finsihed tunning it. I didnt feel like messing with it anymore so we left it alone that night, started it up the next morning, no ticking. Still to this day no ticking. How loud is the ticking? Is it louder than you normal LS1 sewing machine sound?

It starts of not loud at all and then it ends up sounding really loud. Kinda acts likr the lifter is losing pressure.

Doubt it's the oil o-ring. I replaced one on a guys car that was pinched. He was getting 20lbs of pressure at idle, you have 40. But hey, strangers things have happened. Looks like you did not take the heads off, so I would rule out lifters (unless of course the o-ring is pinched)
Definately recheck the valvetrain. Make certain all the pushrods look good, the rockers are torqued to spec, and springs look good.
Keep us informed.

I got in my car went to work and on the way it started tapping again. When I left from work it tapped when I first started it up and the whole way home it was quite no tapping. I don't understand this. I'm thinking about checking the oil ring but I do have 40lbs at idle and crusing. Before the swap the oil pressure went up with the RPM's and now it stays at 40lbs all the time.

I know what it is. My car did the EXACT same thing. It was the o ring. I had good oil pressure too. It would come and go. It drove me nuts. I thought it was my lifters, so I changed them. It still ticked. Finally I decided to try the o-ring, IT FIXED IT. Just change it

If your oil stays at 40lbs (you mentioned it went to 55 in an earlier post) then it is the o-ring. It allows air to get up there an causes the lifters to stick creating a ticking noise
